Playing music reminiscent of his native Alabama, Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck offers the sound of southern gothic plains, steeped in wisdom and nostalgia, gospel choruses and pagan choirs. His smoky voice recalls Bill Callaghan’s, but always remains distinctly his own. New York’s Jana Hunter, (signed to Gnomonsong – label of Devendra Banhart and Vetiver’s Andy Cabic) plays alongside, and we can’t imagine a more perfect setting than Salford’s Sacred Trinity Chapel.
