Five years after Slamhandle’s inception, the Fayetteville, NC band is finally doing what it intended to do: tear the stage apart. Combing both metal and hardcore, the band’s new music has surpassed any of its previous work in terms of technicality, heaviness, and emotion. With a new, solid lineup consisting of Brandy Jacobs (vocals), Chris Haney (guitar), Mike Coppola (bass), Jonathan Norris (drums), and Justin Vernon (guitar), the band has stripped itself of any of its former misconceptions and shown that the brink of collapse can bring out the best in a band.
Chris Haney, the core of Slamhandle, has renowned himself as Fayetteville’s most valuable guitar player. His signature style of writing and playing has been coveted by many Fayetteville musicians anxious to form bands with him. Mike Coppola, a bassist with a stage presence all his own, tops the live show off with characteristic jumps, spins, and lashings at the audience. Jonathan Norris, a drummer of only three years, surpasses most of his peers in terms of rhythm and precision. His ability to effortlessly play complicated patterns and blast out extreme beats makes him one of the best drummers in the area. Justin Vernon, the latest addition to Slamhandle, hails from Texas and brings to the band gut-wrenching leads and incredible riffs to complement the writing style of Haney. Finally, vocalist Brandy Jacobs’ incredible screams have shocked nearly every audience the band has had. Coupled with talent is her intense live performance which strips herself of any consciousness and places herself in the music itself, aware of little else.
The band has opened up for such national acts as Otep, Walls of Jericho, Ill Nino, and Unearth, and toured throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio. Having honed their live performance and songwriting to a science, the band is ready to begin furiously playing again as well as finishing a new CD. Despite years of trying times, Slamhandle has finally emerged victorious and is ready to take the world by storm. Anxious to hit the road, 2009 can only bring good things for the band.
