Slaveya, founded in 1984, takes its name from the Bulgarian word for "nightingale." Slaveya performs traditional unaccompanied vocal music from the Balkans and neighboring regions. The group’s repertoire is drawn primarily from the vocal heritage of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Russia, Georgia, Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia. Traditionally sung by women, the lyrics reflect the constants of village life. Slaveya performs at festivals and other events throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region.
Slaveya's CD, _On the Village Square: Songs from the Balkans and Beyond_ was released in February 2008. To purchase and download tracks or the album, go to DigStation: http://www.digstation.com; CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com; iTunes; and Indie Rhythm: http://www.indierhythm.com.
