here are words spoken by others about us:
Dan Kubinski (die kreuzen / decapitado) - there’s a band that is half from Milwaukee and half from Madison called Zebras who are really cool. They’re totally insane and unclassifiable
Jello Biafra / Alternative Tentacles - i like it quite a bit
Hank III - (said to vincent) now, that's not you singing. that sounds like a girl singing
fan-belt - Anyone with a penchant to shake off some excess energy should take to this show like a thirteen year old to a paintball gun. Zebra’s high energy riffage and shouts is Pretty Girls Makes Graves’, tougher, more cracked-out older sister
missionfreak.com - (Preview: Paleo w/ Old Time Relijun, Zebras, Dead Larry, and Adam Matthew Havlin at The Mill, Iowa) The surprise, at least for the blogger, of this bill is Madison’s Zebras. The trio is bursting at the seems with the imminent release (July-ish) of their debut EP. Tonight you get a preview of the 7 songs they’ve recorded and mastered for the release (one of ‘em streaming down there) as well as a hand full of others. And yeah, you read the two preceding paragraphs, these guys ain’t quite guitar strumming troubadours, or folk infused jammy goodness, this is angular, jumpy, spastic, erratic, Prog-dance-punk (yeah, two hyphens). They’ll probably stick out like three sore thumbs tonight. But don’t be frightened if you find yourself shimmying on the dancefloor, there’ll be at least a couple of us mission freakers out there too (okay, at least me). Peep that song down there and tell me you’re not excited
The Onion - Zebras
Previously: After the breakup of their band The Window Smashers, Vincent Presley and Lacey Smith resurrected their “pre-coital” post-punk under the name Zebras. Drummer-singer Presley later switched to guitar, and Shawn Pierce joined on drums.
New: Zebras recently finished recording with Shane Hochstetler of the Milwaukee band Call Me Lightning. It’s a smart pairing—the two bands aren’t exactly similar, but their music shares a lean feel and a sense of panic. The new material sharpens and speeds up The Window Smashers’ attack with quick rhythm changes and vocals that consist of semi-melodic barking. Of the 10 songs in the works, Zebras plans to release seven on an LP, Parasitic Clones Under The Strong Arm Of The Robotic Machine, later this month.
Standout track: “I hate life! I hate-hate life!” Presley shrieks on “Me U And God,” a song that finds joy in its wretchedness, especially during a mid-song breakdown that pits a snarling guitar run against Smith’s quickly morphing synth tones.
Madison Decider (review of new years eve show) - At fucking 2:30 a.m., Zebras finally wobbled their way to the stage. The few attendees remaining bobbed their heads drowsily, as Moog player Lacey Smith weaved in and out of guitarist/vocalist Vincent Presley’s blanket of rapid-fire, angular guitar work and sassy yelping. Drummer Shawn Pierce swayed back and forth on his drum stool between songs and spat beer all over himself. Presley and Pierce also appeared to have great difficulty figuring out what songs they were about to play. Despite their drunkenness, and the ridiculous time slot, Zebras still managed to execute even the hyper-technical riffing of “The Spell.” At the show’s end, Presley collapsed into his amp and Decider went home with pockets full of pretzels
Jessica Steinhoff from The Isthmus - Local prog-punk trio Zebras is only a year old, but it's managed to play some of the most rocking local shows of 2008 (this is followed by a nice little interview. read it here: http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=24727)
Dave 3000 from 89.9 fm - one of the Best Local Records of 2008
Jake Shut (Crustacean Records) - "Zebras play spastic, fun, discordant, deconstructionist art-punk-metal"
milwaukee decider - madison band Zebras pulled together a seven-song set called Parasitic Clones Under The Strong Arm Of The Robot Machine just over a year ago, and they've finally got it stamped onto a side of vinyl. Recorded by Shane Hochstetler of Milwaukee band Call Me Lightning, it just might be the sharpest, fullest-sounding introduction yet to Zebras' music--a frantic-yet-catchy collision of shrill, shrieked vocals, chromatic guitar and synth squiggles, and tightly syncopated drums to hold it all together
