Sled Island is an annual independent multi-venue music and arts festival in Calgary, Alberta that attracts over 17,500 attendees each year. Entering its third year, it aims to celebrate, showcase and nurture the best emerging and established local talent alongside national and international independent music, comedy, film and art. Sled Island 2009 expects to have over 170 bands perform. Previous musical acts have included: Wire, Mogwai, Broken Social Scene, Yo La Tengo, RZA, Drive-By Truckers, Chad VanGaalen, Tegan & Sara, Boredoms, Cat Power, Women, Spoon, Jonathan Richman and many more.
It is an event with many parts. The bulk of the festival happens in Calgary from June 24-27, 2009. There are music shows in many venues around town and we have a main outdoor site at Olympic Plaza operating on June 26. Though many of our club shows are in bars, our main outdoor site as well as a handful of other shows (such as concerts in Central United Church or at Tubby Dogg or at various all ages spaces) welcome listeners of any age. There are art shows happening in various galleries, as well as movies and comedy shows. We will be posting a full schedule of all events - and where and when they are happening - in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Sled Island 2009 will feature performances by the influential indie rock darlings The Breeders (featuring Kim Deal of the Pixies) making their first Calgary performance, NYC post-punk revivalists Liars bringing the noise, the legendary Canadian metal band Anvil the recent subjects of the critically acclaimed documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil and the garage rock assault of Tel Aviv's Monotonix known for their incredible live show New Orleans-based musician and mad genius inventor of the ' drum buddy' Quintron & Ms. Pussycat will bring the party along with blood-soaked party rocker Andrew W.K. and Toronto-based electro tour-de-force Holy Fuck on the more 'offensive' front. Phil Elverum's (of The Microphones) latest moniker Mount Eerie will deliver a symbiotic balance of fuzz and folk matched by Owen Pallett's Final Fantasy surrealist violin stage performance. Calgary-based experimental icons Azeda Booth aim to mystify crowds along with their all-male psychedelic pop counterparts Women making their second festival appearance. Many more to come!
We encourage you to buy a pass, use it to its fullest, and go out and discover as many amazing bands and artists as you can. We've booked this sucker to be chock full of jaw dropping performances. Stamped. No erasies.

Was wondering if anyone was wanting to give a fellow Winnipeg a ride to the Fest this year? (From Winnipeg of course) I can even be a tour manager for a band sans charge. Meaning i'll be your bitch. And i'll even pitch for gas.
Looking forward to the festival, unbelievable line-up. I think i'm just going to take the days off work. Keep listening to the "POKE" i'm going to throw on a bunch of Sled Island talent next show.
