Slim Richey's Interests
General
Playing and learning guitar: .. Classic jazz . Old pop tunes done in a jazzy style, viper tunes (from the '30s & '40s, what a nice period in so many ways). Menudo (the food), travel, the desert of Texas out by Terlingua, islands (and the east coast of Costa Rica), making Ciabbata bread toast for the love of my life* , and stuff like that. . . .................................<><><><><>...<><><> *her name is Meaux Jeaux .... pronounced moe-joe .................................<><><><><>...<><>

The video below is of an ex-student and good friend, Clint Strong. The tune he plays here is “Miss Ann’s Tempo” by Grant Green. I don’t think he knows the name of it. When he was 10 years old I assigned him this tune, showed him the head and got him started on transcribing all of Grant’s solos from a cassette tape. In this clip he pays tribute to Grant by playing all of his solos note-for-note before blasting off into Clint-Strong-maga-licks. Check out his stuff on youtube. He teaches at Lamb Music in the Fort Worth area.

Movies
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fargo, Being There, The Third Man, Legends of the Fall (a movie with glaring weaknesses but I liked the story and Anthony Hopkins), & The Last Picture Show, Dr. Strange Love, and the list goes on!
Television
I only watch television when I stay in motels. What a waste of time! I like to be on television, and I'll watch DVDs of TV shows sometimes but I wouldn't own a television (ugh!). Hey! I'm not criticizing you!! Hey, you like television?

Write me if you like it. If you don't like it, write that on a piece of paper and put it in a corked bottle and throw it in the ocean. A radio show of The Kat's Meow is at:

I like radio.
Books
I like biographies of jazz musicians and books on libertarian themes, free market environmentalism and economics, especially Austrian Economics." I Must Speak Out" by Carl Watner is a book I could read over and over. Rigoberto Stewart, Joseph Campbell, and J. Krishnamurti are favorite authors. I like fiction too. Flannery O'Connor, Zora Neale Hurston, Cormac McCarthy, and Larry McMurtry. . I like sufi poetry (Hafiz) and my favorite poet is Wislawa Szymborska. Don't get me started. I'm not afraid of freedom and I'm sad that so many people are! I'm a thoughtful person and always on the prowl for new insights (psychology, philosophy, economics, art, music, you name it!)
Heroes
Francie Meaux Jeaux (OMG! - the love of my life), all of my children and grand children, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessell, Herb Ellis, Kat Edmonson, Emily Gimble, Carl Watner, Rigoberto Stewart, Joseph Campbell, Flannery O'Connor, Zora Neale Hurston and the list will go on and on if I think long. <><> <><>

<><><> My other bands are Salt Lick and Seven Come Eleven. I've played with lots of heavies and produced their albums. It looks like The Kat's Meow is going to be a "heavy"! Rising to fame at this very moment! Fever, our version here, is we three (with drummer Bobby Natanson). And watch for Emily Gimble. Her star is rising! She sings and plays piano and is feaured with Jitterbug Vipers! (read my blog about The Jitterbug Vipers and the one about The Kat's Meow and about In These Shoes.)

Definition for today: ...
Voluntaryism is the idea that human relations should be based on voluntary cooperation and natural law, to the exclusion of any political compulsion. I am a voluntarian. A journal is published based on this idea: The Voluntaryist. See also Voluntaryist.com or www.myspace.com/volutaryist

JITTERBUG VIPERS MUSIC VIDEO ..
Who I'd like to meet: People who feel passionately about life and about music. People who are into peaceful anarchy. People into Austrian Economics. People into Goodness, Truth, Beauty, Reality and Mexican food (a bowl of menudo anyone??).
................................<><><><><>...<><>
I have met and I would like to meet: <><><><>
I've met and been friends with Herb Ellis. I've met and jammed with Howard Roberts and Tal Farlow. I've seen Joe Pass several times. I never got to see Wes Montgomery or Barney Kessell. Those are two of my guitar heroes along with Charlie Christian and Freddie Green.
................................<><><><><>...<><>Of the Texas blues players I like T-Bone Walker, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ray Sharpe, Freddy King and Gate Mouth. And I've buddied around with Gate, Ray Sharpe, Mance Liscomb and Stevie Ray. I actually produced three albums on Ray Sharpe. I've seen Freddy King many times.
................................<><><><><>...<><> Other great players from the Southwest are Bennie Garcia, Tom Wolfe (my teachers) and Oscar Moore.
I'm rambling along about people I've met and I wish I had met.
