About me:
VISIT THE OFFICIAL SLOAN*LONGWAY WEBSITE

Sloan was founded to preserve and present Flint and Genesee County's history, including the evolution of the automobile and the industry it spawned. Longway's purpose was to present primarily space, science, and astronomy programs.

Over the years, these two organizations discovered a common thread in their commitment to creativity, which sparks curiosity and fuels discovery and innovation. Whether it's astronomy, ecology or biology, the Underground Railroad, the UAW or underwater treasure, the world is full of things to explore - and Sloan and Longway have provided our community with a place to do it.

Today, Sloan Museum, including Buick Gallery and Longway Planetarium, honor their heritage while finding new and fresh way to look at our present and future, as a communiuty and as a society. Science, history, and technology are combined, allowing you and old alike to experience and celebrate how these disciplines make a difference in our lives each and every day.

Dear Friends,

This Saturday, your letter carriers are asking that you put non-perishable food items in a bag close to your mailbox for them to pick up. The food is going to our local food bank. Saturday is the Annual National Letter Carrier's Food Drive, our nations largest one day food drive. This is put on locally with the NALC, APWU, Greater Flint AFL-CIO central Labor Council, United Way of Genesee County and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

That non-perishable food item you put by your mailbox will make a huge difference to a child, senior citizen, or to the family of the "working poor." As we all know, times are hard and we have no evidence of it getting any better. With families struggling harder than ever, there just isn't enough money to cover all the essentials some weeks. Over fifty percent of the people using the services at the food bank are the families who are working hard, but for extremely low wages.

The food bank has programs such as the Back Pack program. Many kids rely on breakfast and lunch through their school programs and do not get these meals on weekends. On Friday, the school puts nutrious food for them in a back pack to take home to get them through the weekend. They do not suffer the stigma of being "poor" because the food is in a school back pack they bring back on Monday. This is just a small example of what is happening in our community.

We, at United Way, deal with issues such as these on a daily basis. We are commited to our community and we are asking for your help this Saturday. Please remember to set out non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday. PLEASE send out a reminder to your email lists and also talk to your co-workers, union brothers and sisters, friends, family, neighbors, as many people as you can and ask them to please contribute to this food drive.

If you have any questions, call me at 762-5827 or 513-0801.

My thanks and best to you
The Whiting
