THE LIVE ONES

Holy Smokes! Mad Mike Czekaj (ex-Fuzztones) is the leader of the gang and his brother is right there too. They're offering two heavy garage rock songs, first "Dirtweed," a truly dirty and wild lofi rock n roll number, nice and ripe but still rocking. “Don't Look Down” on the B side is somewhat calmer and more emotional but no less intense... .[P]ure dirty rock...like a mixture of the Stooges and DMZ...makes me think of bands like Dead Moon, and like them, this band is most likely mostly to be experienced live.—Flying Revolver (Germany)

"Dirtweed" is a 3 chord street walking bailed up in Stooges tested/Ramones approved twine vibe with cranky & somewhat disturbed singing. "Don't Look Down" sounds like Danzing if the Misfits didn't break up but he led them into the Evil Elvis thing he completely transformed into on his first couple of solo albums—Smashin' Transistors

ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT

Another Saturday Night is pure American rock n roll, maybe even typically New York if you're listening to some of the vocal parts that are reminiscent of the dolls or the fleshtones. The songwriting, rooted in all the epochs of rock and roll, is also timeless, simple, raw and energetic Garage Rock with background vocals, just like you want it. With this one we should keep our eyes open for a LP because of of these songs whet your appetite for more.—Flying Revolver (Germany)

1-800-BAND/SNAKES SPLIT 7"

This split is a pretty good indicator that [Slow Gold Zebra] could be worth keeping an eye on. 1-800-BAND plays that sort of mannered, late 70s/early 80s FM radio rock (Tom Petty, Dwight Twilley, Tommy Tutone); there’s a real Benmont Tench worship vibe going on in these, especially “Tropical Meds.” Muted, downplayed, and more or less correct. Snakes pull off a much-missed late night Royal Trux-like swagger, mired in drunken, wasted blues. For right now, this’ll do quite nicely.—Dusted

1-800-BAND play a very nice combo of Big Star, Dwight Twilley, and Is-It-My-Body style Alice Cooper.... [T]he writing and execution is so precise that I can’t help but let this play over and over.—Zgun

Maybe it's the off-kilter vocals and sparse arrangements but 1-800-BAND sound for all the world like a candy-coated Television playing bent pop songs. Of course this isn't some Klaatu-inspired copycat stunt.... Pretty off-beat and pretty good stuff.—i94 Bar (Australia)

New York City! There ain't no denying where both these bands are aiming their sights from. It's the New York City of older times though.1-800-BAND have a walking down the street the street on a sunny day after a couple months of grey skies and slush on the sidewalk. A bounce in their step like the character Lou Reed played on Coney Island Baby sans the peroxide, cop shades and a sentiment that was really hard to believe. These songs might very well be odes to a girl or dealer. The Snakes side sounds decade later, where it was maybe even more seedy and degenerate, the sound of water damaged cassettes of No Wave bands no one hardly heard but once ten years before and dressing down cuz Neil Hagerty is playing sans Pussy Galore at an invite only party in some damp basement. Anything Big Apple post 1989 doesn't exist in either of these band's forte' and both sound fine with that.—Smashin' Transistors

CRIMSON SWEET

Best. Band. Ever.—Roctober

...[S]ounds like Cheap Trick playing in your basement... if Robin Zander were, you know, a girl.—Pittsburgh City Paper

Crimson Sweet saved their best material for their final record.... The A-side is great. Polly Watson’s vocals have never sounded better. She coos, she screams, she knows when to double track. It’s a near-perfect balance of sweet and tough; Guided By Voices and Joan Jett. “Basement Star” isn’t far behind.—Go Metric

Crimson Sweet come spilling out in a torrent of lo-fi rumblings and blissful pop inversions to deliver their intensely blaring brand of rasping, guitar-soaked therapy. Straddling stadium-sized valour and DIY punk viscosity, Crimson Sweet come up with a larger than life presence tinged with hues of the dark and dirty. Preferring to dwell in crunchy, unpolished arrangements and gruff vocals, which come courtesy of Polly Watson, this seven-inch packs more power into two songs than many bands can ever hope to convey in an entire album. “Wired for the Last Move” is a blistering dose of serrated distortion, while “Basement Star” is a melodious but toothy b-side. With two full-lengths already under their belts, along with a cluster of seven-inches, Crimson Sweet are back with another requisite for the collection.—Exclaim! (Canada)

....Crimson Sweet come off like the best of the hard rock (with a slight bitta pop) New York punk rock one woulda found punching it out for stage-time during those hallowed late-seventies.... I sure woulda liked seeing Crimson Sweet on a Max's bill snuggled between acts like the Heartbreakers, Arthur's Dilemma and who knows who else. Sweet probably woulda blew 'em all off the stage anyways!)—Blog to Comm

Lyrically vaguely impressive, & with considerable aural firepower to match, this is frenetically paced garage rock with one eye trained on the next new wave revival & the other eyeing up any stray trash that happens to wander in off the sidewalk. Glamorous, infectious, & nearly perfectly formed, Crimson Sweet are currently geeking up the massed denizens of the Big Apple Underground with their addictive strain of guitar-fuelled attack!—Trakmarx
