Slow Motion Heroes are a seven-piece band whose members all have impressive pedigrees having already found musical success in various guises. It all kicked off one night last year when Barry McAuliffe, erstwhile vocalist with Rulers of the Planet was sitting around with Noel Lynch, baton commander with El Bastardo and Revolution of a Sun, when they realised they both liked the same kind of music – and not the typical hardcore sound for which their bands are so well-known – but more mellow tunes from the likes of Sigur Ros and Codeine. This discovery was the impetus for collaborating on a project which would allow them to move away from the hardcore sounds so entrenched in their other projects and experiment with a lighter style. The result is Slow Motion Heroes – a band with a sound that transcends mere indie pop, with soaring melodies and haunting harmonies interspersed with ethereal instrumentals.
Barry got in touch with Jean-Michel Cavallo of the now defunct Cyclefly to take his place behind the drum kit. Noel got mates Dan Breen and Joe Jolley from Hope is Noise on board providing guitar and piano respectively. They both do lead vocals on some tracks and backing vocals in harmony on others. Antoine Madiot was recruited on Hammond organ and backing vocals. Galvin provides additional guitar to complement the elaborate musical arrangements that give Slow Motion Heroes their distinctive sound.
So the rollercoaster ride began. The band started rehearsals in October 2008 and recorded their first demo in March. They travelled to Jean-Mi’s hometown of Antibes on the French Côte d’Azur in April to work with his old friend, producer Sebastien Gastaldi and renowned producer Christian Gence offered his services after hearing the boys play...
