The concept for what would become Sly Lothario began in about 2001. Bryan Cook and Marcelo Quinonez began sketching out ideas for a project that would combine Afro-beat and Jamaican music with contemporary American styles, much in the same way they had already begun combining Latin American styles with avant-jazz, rock and hip-hop in the band Cuchata (www.myspace.com/cuchata). In many ways, Sly Lothario came about as a reaction to the myriad of aimless funk jams and overall lack of tight, large-scale ensembles populating the Seattle music scene. Once the initial seed was sown, it took many years to further develop the idea and find the right line-up (and the time) to make the music happen. In early 2006, the first rehearsals were held with the 9 member group, and about 9 months later they premiered at Lo_Fi on September 30.
