A few short months ago Smallville was just a novel town somewhere in “small-town America”. Certainly you might proceed that from that town of Smallville hails the infamous cartoon character you remember from childhood, Superman. Today it is more… Today, Smallville is a fresh, professionally driven new approach to entertainment. For you, their crafted blend of Contemporary Country music, as well as Current Alternative and vintage Classic Rock music is just over the horizon. You'll soon hear why this band is leaving a wake behind each performance. It's a bird… it's a plane... nope, ladies and gentlemen, it's Smallville.
Smallville started as a “kitchen table concept” at a table in Payson, a small town in Arizona. On a chilly winter day in 2008, founding members, guitarist Jeff Lodge and drummer John Woodmansee sighted that there was ample need for a unique sound and a refined show package to breathe fresh air into audiences across the map. The concept of Smallville was formed as a vehicle to drive that goal.
Like fine wine, carefully selected ingredients were needed to mature the concept. After months of searching, and several “trial versions”, seasoned vocalist Jody Ray, formerly with a very popular Phoenix based band called Urban Country answered a call for help. Ironically, a short time later yet another former Urban Country player, bassist Lorenzo Valentini, became the icing on the rhythym section cake. Smallville was now beyond a mere concept. The band slowly morphed into a youthful sound; full of energy and “synergy”, yet still touted over sixty years combined performance and recording experience. It was obvious to those close to the group that something very magical was occurring in the rehearsal studio and once unleashed, there was little doubt that audiences and venue management alike would agree.
The “show” was then carefully crafted, again using only the finest ingredients. To build the sets, the band carefully chose from the plethora of contemporary, cutting edge artists from the Nashville ranks such as Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Big and Rich and even Arizona's own Dierks Bentley. They brought in a few tunes from contemporary Rock artists such as Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, and even Nickelback. “Our Country leans a bit Rock, and our Rock leans a bit Country” chuckles Lodge. In keeping with Smallville's versatile taste in music, some of the classics were carried into the mix. The group gleaned inspiration (and perhaps a few words and notes) from the likes of John Cougar, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top and even a tune or two from Van Halen. The sets were designed paying close attention to keeping the audience not just entertained, but engaged if not enthralled. The blueprint of the show didn't end with the song selection. “It's super critical that we give the audience every ounce of our energy each and every moment we're on stage” imparts Lodge. “They (the audience) deserve our full attention and they get it”, adds drummer Woodmansee.
Bring Smallville to your town and discover the magic.
