The Smash Brothers consists of emcee/producer Ash Holmz and producer/musician Classicbeatz. The Brooklyn-based duo, which was formed in 2007, initially became aware of each other through a popular music production website. After taking a liking to each other’s music, the two decided to meet up and explore the possibilities of working together. From that meeting the Smash Brothers was formed and they have been cooking up sonic nose-candy ever since.
Ash Holmz, a Syracuse, NY native, is known for his razor-sharp wordplay and poetic, yet gritty flow. His unique rhyming voice has been called a “whispering growl” due to it’s wildly energetic yet seemingly under control tone. His diverse lyricism covers a wide range of topics, and holds little, if any bounds. Holmz prefers to not put himself in a box and come across as only representing one side of life. He talks about the streets, the high life, partying, drugs, politics, money, the lack of money, the ups, and the downs. “Basically I address every facet of life that I have come across because its all a part of who I am”, says Holmz. “When you hear me on a record, you are always going to hear me come from the heart; unfiltered and uncut. The thought of being repetitive makes me sick to my stomach.”
Classicbeatz, a Tampa, Fl native, uses a unique and refined musical approach to create the eccentric backdrops that compliment Holmz’s outer space rhymes. He gets his name from being a classically trained piano and saxophone player. Blessed with an ability to craft huge sounding beats from minimal gear, Classicbeatz’s talent is evident on every Smash Brothers’ production. “Classic’s tracks just hit that spot, they make you want to hop right on them”, says Holmz when speaking about Classicbeatz’s neck breaking heat-rocks. “They have a mood, a personality, its more than just notes. Every track is like an adventure, and I’m an explorer. I go wherever the track takes me and then report the findings back to the people (laughs).”
Sonically, the brothers are in their own lane. With both Ash Holmz and Classicbeatz being proven producers in their own right, they draw on a wide range of musical influences to craft their unique sound, which they call “Smashout Music.” With inspiration ranging from Pink Floyd to Prince to Jay-Z to African tribe music, the brothers have an enormous sonic palette at their disposal. “Smashout Music is about having no limitations, “ says Classicbeatz. “ We try to see how Plutonian we can get, but still relate to earthlings.”
The 2008 Smash Brothers debut album “Fear Factor” solidified the duo as a major force to be reckoned with. All the ingredients are there, and the pot is heating up. With their addictive tracks, high octane live shows, and a global fan base that’s steadily expanding, look for the Smash Enterprise to land near you.
