THE SMASH BROTHERS, a duo of former hardcore scenesters who cashed in their scene points for a pair of turntables and a ticket to a non-stop dance party took the stage next. These DJs, who also happen to be twin brothers, spin remixed versions of party hip-hop and techno, sampling the Jackson 5, Young Jeezy, Justin Timberlake and countless others. They had plenty of crowd-pleasing tricks up their sleeves, including non-stop air-humping and shoulder-shaking, drinking from a gas canister, and frequently triggering gunshot effects.
Tongue-in-cheek as they are, their music is clever and danceable as hell, and they just seem to want to have fun with whoever will listen. During their set, they offered to play private parties for anyone, anytime or place. Lo and behold, two hours after their set ended, the Smash Brothers showed up at a house party on Maryland Avenue to a much more receptive crowd, full of drunk, sweaty, dance-ready students. Despite the weak sound system, they played with the same energy as earlier in the night, except shirtless.
