Sounds Like
Alternative rock-grunge with a sympathetic touch of pop covering an underlying schizophrenic angst.
My name is Kai Brandon Ly but my friends call me Smiley. I have been writing songs for over 10 years now. I have no prior music training and have learnt to play the guitar and piano all by ear so don’t ask me what an A chord or B chord is because I wouldn’t know! Music should come from your soul and not what you think others will like…
I have never thought about taking my music any further than from the confines of my private space where I use it as a way to escape or celebrate the ups and downs of everyday life. Everyone has a hobby and one of my hobbies is to express myself through my music.
I am inspired by everything: who isn't?!
If it weren’t for people like Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Jeff Buckley to name a few, I would of probably ended up being a 50 Cent or Justin Timberlake wannabe. I hate the music industry as it is today and could go on all day about how I loathe music moguls and their self claimed god-like status over us easily manipulated mortals. Thank F for things like MySpace and YouTube where now we can listen to whoever we want, when ever we want…
I have been uploading videos on my YouTube channel (smileykai77) for the last year now and enjoy the interaction I get from my subscribers. I have a loyal following of over 500 subscribers and unlike many other YouTubians, I am not doing it to get famous! I use it like an on-line video diary to see myself grow and evolve as a human being.
How would I describe my music? Answer: soft rock-grunge with a twist of sympathetic pop bordering schizophrenic anarchy. I am inspired by the things I see and feel around me and would describe my lyrics as being quite political but have a strong emphasise on the promotion of self-awareness and open-mindedness. I choose to write songs that hopefully allow the listener to open their mind and think about what is truly important to them.
I used to open-mic but that was over 3 years ago in my local pubs and bars in Stoke Newington. I am always nervous performing in front of anyone but find myself enjoying it when I do. It’s a great feeling knowing that I have connected with somebody through my music.
It has never crossed my mind to be famous and I am not the type of person to kiss arse to get what I want. Being rich and famous has never been priority in my list of things to do before I die, but living in a world in peace, love and harmony is…

Man, that's good. I was talking to my grandpa a few weeks ago and he basically said to live as you wish others to live and they will begin to live similarly if you set the right example. I've realized that you can not force your views on someone or even try to, because it doesn't work. You must manifest yourself to be what you wish to see in others; and if they choose to follow your example, that is their decision.
I know it is difficult to watch people "dumb themselves down" or believe in something that makes no sense, or let themselves become corrupted by those in power. But I can not do anything about it other than set an example and share my life with those who need it.
