Smithsonian Folkways Mission:
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum of the United States. We are dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound. We believe that musical and cultural diversity contributes to the vitality and quality of life throughout the world. Through the dissemination of audio recordings and educational materials we seek to strengthen people's engagement with their own cultural heritage and to enhance their awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage of others. Our mission is the legacy of Moses Asch, who founded Folkways Records in 1948 to document "people's music," spoken word, instruction, and sounds from around the world. The Smithsonian acquired Folkways from the Asch estate in 1987, and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings has continued the Folkways commitment to cultural diversity, education, increased understanding, and lively engagement with the world of sound.

Los Texmaniacs have fun with their conjunto tejano music on audio engineer Joe Treviño's back porch in San Antonio, Texas. Max Baca (right), on the bajo sexto guitar, says conjunto began with its early pioneers "listening to the German oompa music on the radio in the late 1920s. They would imitate, but in doing so they created their own sound." To appeal to the younger generation, the Texmaniacs "put it up in high gear while preserving the natural beauty of the traditional music."

The improvisatory, string-driven music of Veracruz called son jarocho has enjoyed several decades of major resurgence. This "back-to-the-future" recording allies elder farmer and rancher musicians with the next generation of forward-looking innovators who comprise the group Son de Madera.
Son de Mi Tierra ("They are from my land") burgeons with creativity and reverence for both the old and the new as it draws from rural roots to produce fresh interpretations of this popular Mexican regional music.
Linda Griffiths (Aberystwyth, Wales) and her daughter, Lisa Healy, are accompanied by Ceri Rhys Matthews (Pencader, Wales).Griffiths has participated in Wales's folk scene for more than thirty years. She has released twelve albums of traditional and contemporary folk music, both as a member of the Welsh folk group Plethyn and as a solo artist. She is accompanied by her eldest daughter, Lisa, who is currently studying musical theater at the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester. Matthews is a nationally and internationally acclaimed piper and flute player. As a soloist and a member of the band Fernhill, he has numerous recordings; he also produced the Smithsonian Folkways CD, Blodeugerdd—Song of the Flowers. Matthews has traveled around the world to share Welsh folk music, and has researched and taught traditional music and culture in Wales.

Mike Seeger will be missed. He was a perfomer at the San Diego Folk Festival (at SDSU) in the mid 1970's . He stayed at my parents house with his girlfriend on the Family Room couch for about 4 evenings during the 1974 or 1975 festival. I remember him being very softspoken and friendly... cheers to Mike for all the great music over the years.

I'm currently learning to play the dulcimer using "The Appalachian Dulcimer" by Jean Ritchie released by Folkways. Amazing! Thanks for your invaluable recordings!
Thanks for your friendship, In the last week, I've listened to 23 of the 24 Smithsonian Folkways 1 hour programmes and found it amazing that even though I hadn't been born in many of the eras that were covered, the music itself had a major influence not only on my life, but also on many of the songs I have written and performed.
The people who dediated their lives to collecting this music should be held in the highest esteem, as should those of you who continue to maintain the tradition.
Really appreciate the different music that you record and keep on with showing the American Roots of all our music. Someday hope to visit the great Smithsonian Museam in Washington DC. When I was manager of the Famous 5- time Grammy Award Winner and the King of Tex Mex , Accoridon Music Mr.Flaco Jimenez, himself. We did a documnetary for you. I believe we also donated one of his accordions to your wonderful Musuem. Most of what The Texmanicas play which is good, are classic recordings that Flaco did,and took Max Baca all over the USA and Europe, the world , with him whiile Max was learing. So it is good that is he carring his music on. Amelia Victoria Castillo
