  • Bio

In the summer of '05 Chris Graves and Mark Barbour (then of CL1) got together to make some noise. A few tunes came together and a band was born. They would be free to write as they desired and would not be limited to a genre of music. Initially they jammed with Jenn Moffett (also of CL1) and Malori Rae (Midwest Up In Arms). For a short while they ended up as a 3 piece with Mark on guitar/vocals, Chris on bass/vocals and Jenn on drums as Black Sheep Squadron (a very pertinent moniker). Unfortunately the Squadron crashed and burned before it got off the ground. Not much happened until a former band mate Don Hooligan (Johnny Hooligan) was contacted to put the right touches to the music. .. The band continued as a power trio for close to 3 years playing mostly fast, angry (but very hooky) tunes along the lines of Zeke and DRI until the band asked a former jamming partner Ramblin' Dave Hamblin (Jonny and the Rollercoasters) to join the band on bass. This would free Chris up to jam out on guitar as was originally intended and to expand on their increasingly Heavy influences of Nebula, Kyuss and Suplecs. The addition of a second guitar in the band, as well as tuning down another step would form the Heavy sound that Smoke Theory is now known for... Never putting aside the influence of AC/DC, ZZ Top, Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Slayer, Black Sabbath or for that matter any surfy, greasy or garagey early Rock'n'Roll the Smoke rolls on. In a world of fake Rock'n'Rollers who stress image over riffage Smoke Theory take a stand as a band who doesn't rely on fruity hairdo's, women's clothing and tons of shit pierced to their faces to make a statement. The music speaks for itself. Smoke Theory are still the black sheep after all but they will continue to smoke your brain with the most infectious hooks and grooves that a mere $5 live show will buy. .. Let the Smoke roll... .. ..............
