Sounds Like
When someone asks you, "so who do you sound like?" I feel somewhat bad in saying, "Nobody". You tell us, we dont know. Some say "Southern Rock" some say "Rock n' Roll". We're just playin' what we play.
Smokewagon .44 is the perfect sing-along, dance-along and drink-along band. They are best described as “a rock band with a lot of southern style.” The phrase, “Hearty Texas Rock" was coined in the early days of the band's career and seemed to set the overall mood and tone for the band. You can expect to hear meaty guitars (Priest), booming drums and bass (Segars and Bradbury), and the trill of a piano and warmth of a blues harp carrying the melodies along (Tillman). The vocals (John Priest, lead and Dan Tillman, backing) are powerful, melodic and harmonious and tell rich tales that everyone can seem to relate to. The songs seem to flow evenly in an upbeat manner, telling stories of both successful and failed relationships, stories of too much drinking, or the story of where life leaves you from past experiences.
All members of Smokewagon .44 are from the North Texas area. The band came together in the fall of 2003 and have stayed rock solid since. With all members coming from such different backgrounds in music such as Rock, Folk, Punk, and even Classical, it is hard to say what influenced the sound they have today. Most would say they are “New Country” or “Alt. Country”, some say they are “Southern Rock” and some are happy with simply, “Rock and Roll”. After several months of hammering away at writing and finding the right chemistry, the boys of Smokewagon .44 emerged with a set of songs and stage presence that ultimately displays the bands look, thoughts, ideas and demeanor.
Their first full length CD, “Broken and Beer Stained” was recorded and produced by Smokewagon .44 along with the aid of renown local producer/engineer Alex Gerst at the Indian Trail Studios in Krum, Texas. His expertise lent well to capturing the melodic power and soul that only Smokewagon .44 can provide. You'll find the same expertise from Alex when listening to such greats as Doosu, The Mermaid Purse, Flickerstick, Hagfish, Ministry, Jibe and The Feds. He has provided extensive work for the producers of Godsmack, Nine Inch Nails, Tripping Daisy, Stabbing Westward, and The Toadies.
So grab a beer or a whiskey and whatever, raise it high in the sky and let your boys in Smokewagon .44 do the rest to bid you farewell to the boring “cookie cutter” music you’re used to listening to. This is the real thing!
