| About Smokey’s Round-up |
|
Smokey Hormel was born in Hollywood, California. As a teenager, Smokey met Jimmy Wyble, the great guitarist from Bob Wills Texas Playboys. He took some guitar lessons from Jimmy who taught him about two-line improvisation, Charlie Christian and Western Swing music. Since then, Smokey has enjoyed a diverse 25 year musical career, playing with the likes of Patsy Montana, The Blasters, Beck, Wanda Jackson, Tom Waits, The Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash.
The idea for Smokey’s Round-up came after a recording session for the Backyardigans (a Nickelodeon cartoon) in 2005. There he met Bob Hofnar (steel guitar) and Charlie Burnham (fiddle). Playing western swing after so many years was a thrill for Smokey. He decided it was time to start his own Western Swing outfit. So he called up Bob and Charlie and said, “Hey boys, it’s time for a round-up! Let’s get together and play some old Bob Wills songs.” They added Tim Luntzel (bass) and Konrad Meisner (drums) to make it swagger and swing.

~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~++~+~+~+~+~+~Bob Hoffnar started playing steel guitar in the past which is where many things have already happened. After learning a particular note in his studies with Lamonte Young he proceeded to learn many of the other notes eventually organizing them into different patterns suitable to cowboy music. Bob says " If you want it to go higher go right. And if you want it to go lower you go left !. Thats about it except for the details." Bob plans on playing his steel guitar in the future which is where he will be spending the rest of his life when he gets around to it. Visit Bob's website www.bobhoffnar.net
~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+Tim Luntzel started playing bass by accident, and since then has played all kinds of music with all kinds of people all over the world.
He counts playing with the Roundup amongst his favorites. Visit Tim's website www.luntzel.com
~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+By now, Smokey's Round-up has become a popular attraction on Wednesday nights at Sonny's in Redhook. Wearing a 20 gallon hat and strumming an old Gibson guitar, Smokey belts out Cowboy songs, old time blues, hokum and hollars. The fiddle laughs. The steel guitar moans. And the rythym section is always cookin'.
The local (two and four legged) patrons all agree, "When Smokey's Round-up comes to Sunny's, it sure is one helluva swingin' and stompin' good time!"
