Wow that's cool Billy, that trailer on The Take. I really want to see that and understand how exactly the production of goods can be put directly in the hands of workers, as socialism calls for it. It's really an idea that I don't understand - how a factory or workforce can be mobilized and worked without a hierarchy in charge - bosses. I mean, they're still have to be people in charge right? I flip burgers at BK for $7.15 an hour and I don't see how the store could be run without bosses or even "team leaders" - the first promotion.

Know where I can find a free copy of The Take somewhere on the internet?

Thanks,
Toma

Protest Italian right-wing mis-use of Indigenous peoples

It has come to our attention that the right-wing/fascist forces in Italy have come out with an anti-immigrant campaign, making use of (without permission) of an image of indigenous peoples/american indian/first nations/aboriginal person by misusing the analogy of what happened to native peoples with european settlement in the Americas.

While it is true that the indigenous peoples of the Americas were negatively impacted by the European colonization, it was not because they were "foreigners", it was because they came to subjagate us who had welcomed them initially with open arms. We identify with all those oppressed by colonialism/imperialism; and a major reason for immigration to Europe and North America is because the capitalist-imperialist powers (EU, US. et. al) have exploited and oppressed both the peoples and the countries of the third world. Those who immigrate to Europe and North America simply are trying to survive; a basic universal human right, and should not be attacked for it, but should be allied with, to end capitalist-imperialist oppression.

Yes to Indigenous Sovereignty, Yes to Immigrant Rights
No Human Being Is Illegal; To end poverty, end capitalist-imperialist oppression.

Them Belly Full, But We Hungry
http://www. brechtforum. org/intensive08
Friday July 11/Sat July 12/Sunday July 13 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

3-DAY INTENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO MARXISM JULY 11-13 2008 NYC
"Them belly full, but we hungry"
The Global Food Crisis & What Capitalism Has To Do With It

As global warming, soaring food prices, war and racism wrack the planet, resistance movements from Nepal to the Niger Delta to Chiapas are linking the looming global crisis to one source: capitalism. But questions remain: Why is the most productive social system humanity has ever created also so destructive? What are the alternatives to capitalism? How do we get there from here?

Using the global food crisis as a starting point, "Them Belly Full, But We Hungry" is a three-day introduction to marxism that seeks to unpack how capitalism works—to get behind surface appearances and see why capitalism must put profit before basic human needs. It will also examine the intersections of revolutionary movements and people's struggles against the ravages of capitalism and its three pillars, homophobia, racism, and sexism. The intensive is designed for workers, students, artists and activists who are interested in not only understanding the world, but changing it.

Marx brought a dialectical approach to participating in social change. He recognized that an understanding of the world cannot come from passive contemplation alone, that active struggle is necessary. Yet he also insisted that analysis, critical reflection--learning from our own experience as well as those of others--and struggle to make our concepts and ways of seeing both clear and accessible are as important as political engagement in the streets.

As Bob Marley’s song goes: "Them belly full, but we hungry… Now the weak must get strong"

It's great that you've added me as a friend. I've written a number of songs dedicated to Priya Reddy, otherwise known as warcry - an Indian anarchist who lives in New York. I met Priya at the 2005 Earth First Gathering in England, at which she presented a DVD showing her brilliantly interviewing and outwitting delegates to the 2004 Republican Convention.

I falsely came to the conclusion that Priya has been a political prisoner in a psychiatric institution. Caring about what I thought was her predicament, and writing songs about her, kept me going through a difficult period of my life.

My new band Red Day has performed two songs dedicated to Priya - "You're A Rebel" and "On My Own" - correcting my mistake in earlier versions of the songs. "Belly Of The Beast" is also dedicated to her, and "99 Blue Balloons" is partly dedicated to her too. Click on my picture and then on the song titles on the music player to hear them.

Yeah, there is that paradox. It seems to me that there are a lot more good guys hibernating in this decrepit system we call a capitalist society than we actually know of. This is the case with most sociologists for example, which I think may become the career for me, or at least aspects of it.

I have a few questions about the SPUSA, if you don't mind answering or pointing me out to someone who could.

1. What do you think of Ralph Nader and his bid on the White House? It seems Brian Moore and Nader are very similar on platform, but although both are heavily underrated underdogs, Nader has a larger backing.

2. I have run a socialist forum of about 260 members (18k posts) for two years now. Many are members of various leftist parties throughout the world and the US. Although collectively we all could identify ourselves with the SPUSA, or at least its ideology vs. other factions of the left, all seem a bit too "scared" to actually join the party. I myself have been told by wise friends who I've known for two years that it is simply not worth the trouble of getting blacklisted, wire-tapped, socially ostracized, etc. to be a member of the SPUSA. I myself don't like the notion of settling on just one party, but have been the one "advertising" my support for the party. Any comments on that?

Thank you,
Toma

My neck of the woods is Republican country (Upstate NY), so not much goes on other than military recruiting at school and police breakups of peaceful local protests because of "profane" anti-war/Bush signs.

There was an incident a few months ago which incited a lot of controversy with a man who got arrested for displaying a "Fuck Bush" sign downtown. The followup comment to it in the paper was nothing less than magnificent however, one man stating "Some of you are more up-in-arms about a guy saying 'Fuck Bush' than you are with Bush F-ing us." This also brings up the argument that if the newspaper can print the word, why can't one protestor do it?

Anyway, today I'm really happy because I won a $30,000 scholarship to the University of Rochester for four years. It was the Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award which "recognizes [my] commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues."

Which now I may use to show people what socialism really is and how odd it is that the socialist classmate would win such an award.

Thanks for adding me, and thanks for the comment.

How did you find me on the giant MySpace universe, and I wonder how you knew I was a socialist (libertarian/democratic socialist) and possible future member of the SPUSA?

It surprised me, but I'm glad it happened.
