Some of our material is still in print (across the Continant) aswell as the compilations Fierce Panda Records keep churning out. However it is all available on the net via trillions of Record shops, even Amazon.com.
After early interest from John Peel and a release on Fierce Panda Records 75 compilation 'From Greer to Eternity' named 'I feel', Solar Race in 1995 released 'Not Here' single on Silvertone Records followed by a four track 'Solar Race EP'. then "The Peel Sessions Bar 2" put together from two of their Peel Sessions at Maidavaile. 'Resillient Little Muscle' was released in 1996 recorded with John Fryer. The Album 'Homespun' was released in 1997, recorded at Abbey Road with Steve Albini, 'Lee Speaks' being their released track. Fierce Panda Records released another CD Album Compilation with the track 'Skewiff'.
Solar Race were known as a powerful live act. They were invited to support Hole in England. Then toured with Bush in 1997 playing to large audiences around Europe. France was a popular stopping place for Solar Race, at festivals and live recordings for French Radio. Shellac, Steve Albini's band gave "good association" and both played date in England together.
Considering Solar Races obscurity and musical intent, independant of the Manchester music scene at the time they achieved surprising success and support from decerning music listeners and notable figures around. If you ever saw them live you were unlikely to forget them. A powerful trio with vocals that would wake the coldest of souls.
It was around when Lee Speaks came out... the Penny Theatre was a sort of long basement dungeon place with lots of faux-gothic columns and a "stage" about seven feet wide. Not exactly the Forum, but virtually no-one played Canterbury for some reason!
hey-sorry about that.some bollocks hacked into my account and then posted all this ringtones shite. looks like i've got it sorted now though!
while i am here though, the original version of Get Ahead is one of my favourite songs ever.i still kick myself i didn't order a solar race tshirt years ago (it was the blue one with the silver writing that was advertised in those band sheets that used to get posted out in the 90s).
saw you at the penny theatre in canterbury in 1998... i think there were about six people there.. hehe.. i think bigger and better things were deserved!
hey Eilidh. It was lovely to meet you the other night in sheffield. Finally tracked down your myspace. Dunno if you'll ever read this. NO heat, NO Water, Internet? Yeah!? Hope to randomly meet you again sometime. Alex.
Hey,
thanks a lot for my birthday...it makes me very happy :D
Maybe will the band come back one day and make a second album!!! Who knows :D
Thanks again
"The Distants have come close to the sheer power and aural assault of another female fronted band, the now defunct Solar Race who made the astonishing Homespun back in 1997. With more feedback and more discord they might have matched it."
As the female fronted grunge bands exploded in the mid 90's these were Probably one of the only bands around at the time to compete with courtneys huge HOLE!
Great tunes, Great band...
