About me:
Association Solidarité Féminine is a locally founded non-profit organization that helps single mothers in Casablanca live dignified lives. The association helps young single mothers who have traditionally been discriminated against in Morocco, with job training, housing, childcare, and literacy. Our organization helps these women to live autonomously and support and raise their children.
Context:
Single mothers in Morocco have traditionally been discriminated against socially and legally. Muslim and Berber taboos regarding premarital sex and children borne out of wedlock have meant that single mothers have been seen as prostitutes and undesirables. Single mothers face discrimination in the workforce as employers don’t want to hire them, they are often disowned from their families because of the shame the child brings to the family. The young often uneducated women face a very hard decision of whether to abandon their child or try to provide for and raise the child without an education, job training, support or capital to get started.
