Atlantic soul! Soul-jazz and hard bop like Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, and other Blue Note artists. US garage rock like The Music Machine, The Count 5, The Chocolate Watchband. Brit/mod/r-n-b like The Pretty Things, The Who, Them, The Troggs. Turner Classic Moives for all the classic Hollywood stuff. Adult Swim is always a hoot! Comedy Central has some ace shows. The Daily Show, Chapelle Show, and few others. | | Books | Lately I have been reading non-fiction or biographical music books. "Ascension" -John Coltrane and his Quest. "Wall of Pain" Biography of Phil Spector. "Boogaloo", by Arthur Kempton, "Moanin' at Midnight" The Life and Times of Howlin' Wolf. I also love all the old hard boiled writers. Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ross McDonald, Jim Thompson, Mickey Spillane, Richard Prather. | | Heroes | My father for being a patient and good natured guy with a sense of humor and my mother for crackin' the whip to get me motivated. The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones for making me want to learn how to play the guitar and write songs. James Brown for helping a young man find the beat! Jazz musicians for following their hearts and heads to where music might take them! The Hammond organ company for their genius invention! |

About me:
I am a music club promoter, guitar player for The Diplomats of Solid Sound(a Hammond B3 instrumental soul-jazz, funk band) and The Bent Scepters(a garage rock combo). I am currently setting up my own LLC. The new company will be called "Mr. Kicks Productions." I also spin soul and funk records occasionally at clubs in Iowa City under the moniker "Soul Patrol" or "Summer Soul Spin."
