Something about the songs first !! "ROBOPHILIA" was written in around 1977 when my then band, "Wilf Lunn and the Lunnatix" was performing with Wilfred Makepeace Lunn, www.wilflunn.com , and providing the music for his live shows. This particular song accompanied him while he was carried around the stage by a giant female robot called Dreadnought Dorothy. It refers to the fact that he couldn't get a woman, so he built one !! Her hair was in rollers which became rockets and fired off at the song's end !! We nearly injured a few folk.
"WE R GREEN" was written in 2000 for the Green Party of England and Wales with a view to it accompanying one of the election broadcasts. I have played it at a few Party conferences, and it always goes down well !! I wanted a sort of football crowd ambience going on; waving scarves and joining in etc.; and it works really well. I have also uploaded a version sung by a really good friend of mine, Tara Dempsey, who is a wonderful singer. I am always looking for singers to sing, and maybe arrange, my songs, so please get in touch if you are interested !!
The band without Wilf Lunn was called "E2R", which we hoped would represent "electronic rock". We hitched onto the Queen's 1977 Jubilee celebrations as well for loads of free publicity; altho' ours was "E2R" and hers was "EIIR". We were a three piece of Ian Fielding, weirdo guitar thro' effects; Phil Parr, ARP Odyssey; and me on a Vox Continental organ thro effects, with a Bentley Rhythm Ace on top. I am getting around to putting some of our old tracks onto my home web site at www.rokstar.info .
This outfit metamorphosised into a two piece of myself and Simon Goodyear. I played all the music and he worked a light show. I still had the ol' Vox, but now had a much better drum machine and a Yamaha CS30 synth which has an eight note sequencer. It was great fun programming the sequence between numbers !!
By this time I was known as "ROK STAR", having been christened by an agent as he sais he could get some "quality" gigs. It seemed to work, and Rok soon got a bit of a following !! Alas, I couldn't make the break to the Big Time, but I had plenty of fun.
I started playing and singing solo in 1980 !!!!!...........after being in various bands covering all kinds of music from rock to reggae. I decided I wanted to perform live without using any backing tapes etc., and to do all the synthesizer manipulations live.............easier said than done ! But I perservered and started doing quite a few shows; many supporting big names of the time such as "Simple Minds", "Japan", "New Order", "Bow Wow Wow", "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark", "Public Image", and even the "Bay City Rollers" and "Gary Glitter" at the famous "Futurama" week-end gigs in Leeds. I am not much of a studio guy and much prefer performing live. The only snag here is that I hate touting for gigs, so just do what turns up !! (( All the tracks here are played live in one take and not recorded in a studio. There are no overdubs)). I am these days much more guitar oriented for playing over my programmed sequencer, and for live shows I play original songs and cover versions; even trying out some "Beach Boys" by using a vocal harmoniser; but my favourite thing is definitely more rock/blues orientated. In fact, some years ago I entered a national blues contest by sending in a tape, and reached the final !! I got some very odd looks when I arrived and set up my keyboard and synth., but I knew I was doomed when the sound engineer said I was the best act he had seen in the contest. I am afraid the band with the hairy guys smoking roll-ups and a female singer in a black leather mini-skirt had me beat.............
At present I am also in reggae band ( Dancing Fly; formerly Jab-Jab - see my "friends") with three Caribbean pals whom I have worked with on and off for thirty years or so. We play originals, chart hits and one or two Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy and Jimi Hendrix songs in reggae and soca. I am also playing in a hi-tech duo called "BeBop Duo Lux", two fans of Bebop DeLuxe and Bill Nelson who love performing his songs.
John Boy... I joined the LDC on 2nd April. (Late Dads Club 2009). Yep Ella is now 12 weeks old, and she's a wee darlin'. Check my Icon!(pic album uploaded too). Hope all's good in the HUDD, chat soon. "Soul Daddy TEE!!!"
