About me:

SYNOPSIS

After making a misjudged advance towards her mother's boyfriend, 16-year-old Heidi (Abbie Cornish) flees her home for the small Australian ski town of Jindabyne. Entranced by the startling beauty of the wintry landscapes and falling snow, she begins to create a new life for herself. With little money or practical experience, she accepts a job at a petrol station and finds lodging with Irene (Lynette Curran). When she falls for Joe (Sam Worthington), the son of a wealthy local farmer, her self-destructive tendencies re-surface, and her fragile new world threatens to come tumbling down. An erotic, lyrical depiction of a young girls sexual awakening, SOMERSAULT is a breakthrough debut for both its director and its star.

Since its debut in Australia in late 2004, Somersault has gone on to become the countrys most critically-acclaimed film of all time, winning 13 AFI awards (the Australian OSCARS), including best music. Somersault is set for US release in April 2006.

SOUNDTRACK

Decoder Rings songs are textural and atmospheric soundscapes, combining rich organic sounds and electronic meanderings in a musical journey that is as expansive as it is emotive. On the live stage their songs are beautifully complemented by the stunning visual montages of the band's fourth member, Simon K. In fact, Decoder Ring's music never strays far from its cinematic underpinnings. They treat the visual and the sonic as one, achieving in their live performance a flow of images and music that is close to dreamlike.

It was therefore a natural progression for Decoder Ring to become involved in writing music for film and their opportunity arrived when Somersault writer / director Cate Shortland asked them to compose the music for her new film. A visually haunting story of sex, guilt, love and the confusion these forces can cause, Somersault is based around a young girls journey of self discovery set in the stark yet stunning landscapes of Jindabyne in southern New South Wales during winter.

The exquisite glacial sounds of Decoder Ring marry beautifully with the breathtaking visual elements of Somersault. As one reviewer put it "the soundtrack says more about the film than any review could."

QUOTES

A vision of sexual awakening, notable for the performance by Abbie Cornish. Elizabeth Weitzman, NY Daily News

Somersault is an impressive debut feature by an Australian director named Cate Shortland. Its about a young girl who runs away from home and goes to a ski resort in Australia, and its a kind of coming of age story about her sexual awakening, but its done in a very sensitive and non-exploitative way. The thing about it that is maybe most striking is the performance by Abbie Cornish; shes lovely to look at and she has a kind of intensity as an actress, and you think that whatever was in the drinking water or the gene pool that produced Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts, has also produced Abbie Cornish. A.O. Scott, NY Times

"Extraordinary! An incredibly sophisticated, deeply moving, erotic, powerful jewel of a film."
Cate Blanchett

"See this film! Cate Shortland is a visionary director and Abbie Cornish is a revelation."
Geoffrey Rush

"An impressive feature debut."
A.O. Scott, New York Times

"VISCERAL, DREAMY, TENDER AND TERRIFYING. Eerily evokes the marooned feeling between childhood and adulthood. ABBIE CORNISH IS SPECTACULAR."
Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times

"A REMARKABLE FILM. Director Shortland has a remarkable eye for detail and the shifting of tones she achieves is flabbergasting."
Scott Foundas, LA Weekly

"A vision of sexual awakening, notable for the performance by Abbie Cornish."
Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

"****"
Maitland McDonough, TV Guide.com

"RIVETING. Abbie Cornishs performance is remarkable."
Jack Matthews, New York Daily News

"***1/2 POWERFUL. Abbie Cornish amazes."
V.A. Musetto, New York Post

"A hypnotic film with a captivating story and terrific acting. I can't remember a steamier portrayal than Abbie Cornish gives in Somersault."
Tony Medley, Entertainment Today

"With Cornish leading the way, we're hooked. A breakthrough for director Shortland. She brings extraordinary richness and depths of intimacy and characterization."
Jay Carr, AM New York

"Abbie Cornish shines."
Logan Hill, New York Magazine

Dear Somersault~

I saw your film about a year ago at the Barbican Center, London, shortly after you opened the London-Australian Film Festival. I had been anticipating it's release since seeing movie posters in the Tube, and now I'm anticipating the US release! It is such a beautiful, complex film. I hope you find success here!
