“Something Different” mixes improvisational grooves, funk, rock, jazz, world beat and psychedelic jams to create their "far-out" California sound.

The band was founded in 1997 by twin brothers, Ryan (guitar) and Erin Cassidy (drums) along with bass player Kevin Kotaka and Mark on percussion. During the first two years as a band, the guys attended Humboldt State University while performing at local bars, clubs and festivals.

Taking a wild journey and exploring new ground. . . every show. . . is the bands main objective. Each member of “Something Different” has a wide range of musical influences in their background. On any given night the band will perform styles such as psychedellic funk, rock, and and splash from disco to reggae and electronic grooves.

“Something Different” has reached large audiences throughout California and even around the world online. Check them out on their web site at: www.myspace.com/somethingdifferent.

The band jumped into online mp3 sharing and cd sales early .. the file sharing craze hit the world in 1997, and achieved over a quarter of a million downloads as well as CD sales in 9 different countries -- thanks to mp3.com. Their CDs include, 3 studio recorded sessions, Slackadelic recorded in 1998, More Slack recorded in 2001 and "Ready Soon" recorded in 2005. They also have 3 live recordings available. . . Live at Pamplin Grove, Slackadellic trio sessions and Live Slack.

Of course there are always special guests who sit in with “Something Different” on special occasions. such as the late, Great Martin Fierro (Grateful Dead, JGB, Zero), Simon Allen & Rob Lavers (New Mastersounds), Josh Clark (Tea Leaf Green), Jordan Fienstien, Karumba Diabate and many more. So all my instrumentals were done by hip hop producers here in the bay area. I didn't use a band for any of it but I did have a guitarist come in and play some riffs on some songs so it had more of an organic feel. I came up with all the words and melodies and then co arranged the tracks with the producers to fit the song that i came up with. So thats how I did it I dont even play an instrument but melodies and lyrics come to me.

Oh, by the way, I would like to hear an Mp3 of that song you guys used to do all those years ago when you were little high schoolers.... In Our World? I think that was the name of it.....I would totally put that on my MySpace page.... :-) I'm going to go bug Jeff to see if he has a copy, if he does, can I put it on my page? Don't want to make Tom mad enough to delete my MySPace page for copyright infringement.
Cat (or Jeff)

Feb 20 2009 10:17 PM

Hey guys! You know Jeff would come back in a heartbeat, and with me about to be laid off at the end of the year (yes I work for a History Making Bank for the time being)....you never know what might happen. We are going to be in Sacramento in April for my nephews wedding and stopping by a friends house in Tahoe just before.
I'm thinking we should meet up with you guys at some point kay?!
