Influences
We all have many different musical influences, but we are mainly influenced by classic Doom/Heavy Metal/Rock bands such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, The Obsessed, Cathedral, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Trouble, etc. It all adds to our sound, which we didn't think about too much, just plugged in our guitars and went for it.
Lyrically we range from thoughts and observations based on personal experience, alien conspiracy theories and some crazy ideas that have passed through our collective minds, to more political, real-life based lyrics, such as Dead Planet, a song about "climate change," and Mankind's corruption and greed...
So Mortal Be were a Doom Metal band from Doncaster, South Yorks, England. We played Doom Metal influenced by Black Sabbath, Cathedral, Pentagram, The Obsessed, Sleep, Electric Wizard and Saint Vitus. These are the main bands that made us want to play this style.
Obituary...
So Mortal Be’s origins lie in the original power trio line up of Jim Stanley(drums), Steve Wilson (guitar and vocals) and Jim Phaily (Bass and Vocals)
This initial period garnered a successful 4-track e.p entitled “Initiation into Nothingness,” recorded in July 2006.
We rehearsed a lot but our lack of contacts on the Doom scene and our permanent lack of funds meant that we were treading water, most of the time. In our case the old adage that “two’s company and three’s a crowd” certainly rang true and the original line-up imploded at the end of 2006.
For what seemed like a long time we all thought that it was the end.
However, in September 2007 a chance meeting in a local pub meant that we could repair old wounds and talk about our favourite subject - Doom Metal!
Armed with a second guitarist/vocalist in the form of the sublime Russ Thompson (ex-Iron Void, Tomb, Black Maria, Thine) and the original Lord of Doom, Sealey (ex-Iron Void, Tomb, Black Maria, Sermon of Hypocrisy, Scion) on Bass/vocals, the band reformed in a tighter, more aggressive form.
In July 2008, the end finally did happen and the band split for a variety of reasons. But fear not, because the spirit of the band now lives on in post-So Mortal Be projects, Iron Void and Cosmic Funeral, both of which feature former So Mortal Be members.
Let the end begin!!!
