The lions roar explodes from the speakers over a crippling guitar riff and straight down your spine. A suicide dive through a mutiny of drums into the murky depths of a hell-born bass linethis is Sonata, a quartet that has risen above suburban Seattle oblivion with axes aimed squarely at the heart of every sacred last frontier.
In the world Sonata brings to life, there is no room for hypocrites, fascists, half-truths, martyrs, or pacifists. Or half-assed musicianship. And now youve met.
Barely six months after coming together over a chance run-in at Guitar Center, the band entered the studio in May 2004, lightning in hand, and the result was Burn the Chapters, an EP bristling with the intensity of a firebrand preacher.
Sonata backed the album with a summer spent ripping apart the clubs of Seattle, kicking corporate ass with the likes of M.T.F. and Metal Church. A second album is already in the works for early spring. Christmas will bring a blitzkrieg of the west coast and a slew of newly-torn sonic assholes. Live, the packaged energy of Burn the Chapters is maddeningly unleashed, and Sonata shatters your cozy sense of conventional metal--from the ragged and manic heights of A Shared Madness, off the first EP, to the haunted and driven Angels, a thundering tribute to a fallen patriarch. Life, death, love, hate, presidents and saintsnothing will ever be safe again.
Driving the drums like the dogs of hell is Butters. Kenny Hughes rides the bass with the zeal of a kamikaze pilot, and Michael Stanleys guitars may well be possessed. County Bookwalter owns the venomous throat out front.
