Worked as a partner - performer - singer - writer - producer alongside Grammy Winner and one of the all time ultimate artists Buddy Miles. Best known as the drummer in Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, Buddy Miles also had a lengthy solo career that drew from rock, blues, soul, and funk in varying combinations. Born George Miles in Omaha, NE, on September 5, 1947, he started playing the drums at age nine, and joined his father's jazz band the Bebops as a mere 12 year old. As a teenager, he went on to play with several jazz and R&B outfits, most prominently backing vocal groups like Ruby & the Romantics, the Ink Spots, and the Delfonics. In 1966, he joined Wilson Pickett's touring revue, where he was spotted by blues-rock guitarist Mike Bloomfield. Bloomfield had left the Paul Butterfield Blues Band earlier in 1967 and was putting together a new group, the Electric Flag, which was slated to be an ambitious fusion of rock, soul, blues, psychedelia, and jazz. Bloomfield invited Miles to join up, and the band made its debut at the Monterey Pop Festival; unfortunately, the original lineup splintered in 1968. With founder Bloomfield gone, Miles briefly took over leadership of the band on its second studio album, which failed to reignite the public's interest. With the Electric Flag's horn section in tow, Miles split to form his own group, the similarly eclectic Buddy Miles Express. Signed to Mercury, the group issued its debut album, Expressway to Your Skull, in 1968, with Miles' fellow Monterey Pop alum Jimi Hendrix in the producer's chair. In turn, Miles played on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album, and later took part in an all-star jam session that resulted in Muddy Waters' Fathers and Sons album. Hendrix also produced the Miles Express' follow-up, 1969's Electric Church, and disbanded his backing band the Experience later that year; shortly afterward, Hendrix, Miles, and bassist Billy Cox formed Band of Gypsys, one of the first all-black rock bands. Bluesier and funkier than Hendrix's previous work, Band of Gypsys didn't last long in its original incarnation; Miles departed in 1970, replaced by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, but not before his powerhouse work was showcased on the group's lone album, the live Band of Gypsys. After backing John McLaughlin on 1970's Devotion, Miles returned to the role of bandleader and recorded his most popular album, Them Changes, in 1971; it stayed on the charts for more than a year, and the title cut became Miles' signature song. From December 1971 to April 1972, Miles toured with Carlos Santana, which produced the CBS-released concert document Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!; recorded inside an inactive volcano in Hawaii, the album sold very well, climbing into the Top Ten. Miles cut a few more albums for CBS, participated in a short-lived Electric Flag reunion in 1974, then moved to Casablanca in 1975 for a pair of LPs. Aside from a one-off album for Atlantic in 1981 (Sneak Attack), Miles kept a low profile over the next decade, partly to battle personal problems. Miles returned in 1986 as the lead voice in a TV ad campaign that featured clay-animated raisins singing "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"; the ads proved so popular that a kid-friendly musical franchise was spun off, and thus Miles became the lead singer of the California Raisins, performing on two albums (mostly R&B covers) and a Christmas special. Additionally, Miles rejoined his old friend Carlos Santana as the official lead vocalist of Santana during part of the late '80s, making his studio debut on 1987's Freedom. In the early '90s, Miles played with Bootsy Collins (both solo and as members of Hardware), and in 1994 he formed a new version of the Express with Charlie Torres on Bass and Vocals - Roderick Kohn Guitar and Vocals - Mark Leach Hammond B3 and keyboards with vocals - and Kenn Moutenot performing on drums and vocals acting as manager producer songwriting partner .Buddy recorded Hell and Back for Rykodisc. Miles Away From Home followed in 1997 on Hip-O. Miles toured steadily through the '90s into a Bluesberries C.D. featuring the Stevie Ray Vaughn rhythm section. A distant relative of Enrico Caruso, Deodato got started by playing the accordion at age 12. Shortly after, he started studying piano as with orchestration, arranging and conducting, by himself, through books and observation and spending many evenings sitting behind orchestras and watching how they played. His first break came at age 17, when he arranged and conducted his first recording session for a 28 piece orchestra. Soon after, Deodato became one of the most respected arrangers and pianists in Rio's busy music scene during the bossa-nova era. At his parents request, he continued his college studies for 3 more years, but eventually dedicated himself exclusively to music by playing and recording for such artists as Milton Nascimento, Marcos Valle, Elis Regina and Antonio Carlos Jobim. In 1967 Deodato moved to New York invited by Lulz Bonfa, the legendary composer of "Black Orpheus" ("Morning Of Carnival"). Deodato continued … Besides arranging many of Bonfa's records, Deodato also did extensive studio work for Astrud Gilberto, Walter Wanderley, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle, and many other Brazilian artists who were living in New York at that time.Shortly after that, he started working with Jazz artists such as Wes Montgomery, Ray Bryant and Stanley Turrentine. Later on he achieved a strong reputation in the fields of pop and black music, arranging for Frank Sinatra ("Sinatra & Co."), Roberta Flack ("Killing Me Softly", "Chapter Two", "Quiet Fire"), Aretha Franklin ("Let Me In Your Life") and many others. Deodato has also worked on several movie scores, though this has never been his main occupation. Among them: "The Onion Field", "The Black Pearl", "Ghostbusters U", "White Nights", "The Girl From lpanema", "The Adventurers" (recorded with A.C. Jobim and the London Symphony Orchestra), "The Gentle Rain", "Target Risk", "The Reporter", "Beat Street", "Body Rock", "Bossa Nova", to name a few. After 72 years of world wide touring (including.-Australia, Japan, China, South America, Europe) and 8 coast to coast tours of the US, Deodato decided to concentrate on studio work once again, and get to work as a producer as well. Besides highly successful solo albums for the CTI, MCA, Warner And Atlantic labels, his work as a producer/arranger earned him several more laurels. Deodato Continued … One of his first productions was Kool and The Gang's "Celebration" (number I pop single), which projected him as one of the world's top producers. Since then he has applied his Midas touch in best selling albums for such acts as Earth, Wind & Fire, Michael Franks, Gwen Guthrie, Chuck Mangione, Breakfast Club, The Dazz Band, One Way, Con-Funk-Shun, Pretty Poison, Kevin Rowland (Dexy's Midnight Runners), White Lion and Brenda K.Starr for whom he produced the Top 5 pop hit "I Still Believe" in 1987. In 1998, Deodato arranged for Brazilian pop acts: Titds ("Vol. 11", with sales over 500,000 copies) and Carlinhos Brown ("Omelete Man"), as well as for the latest album by pop-rock band "Pendlope Channosa", released in 1999. He was also special guest on the latest project by Japanese pop star Akemi Kakihara, recorded in London on summer 98. Deodato Continued … In 1999 he scored "Bossa Nova", a Bruno Barreto film, starring Amy Irving. The score has been nominated for an Oscar in Brazil as well as submitted in the US for best movie score and best movie song ("Suddenly", co-written with legendary lyricist Norman Gimbel). Deodato has also produced the CD of that same movie score for Verve Records. Around that same time, he finished producing and arranging a CD for Brazilian-Japanese singer Lisa Ono released in July 2000. Later he went to Europe to work with Frankfurt based band "Mardi-Gras BB" for Polygram and UK techno-pop-dance group "Electric J" and more recently, started working with young French rock singer Damien Saez for Island Records (Universal). Deodato continues to be involved with state-of-the-art music production. His future plans include a series of new productions, specially young undeveloped artists, more writing and a few selected movie scores. Deodato's arrangement of "2001 " has 3 recently found its way into the repertoire of the rock band Phish and his arranging work has for Bjork's "Homogenic" CD has been touted as a all-time classic. It looks like his work will continue to be as important as ever and way into the next century and as the year 2000 changes into 2001, Deodato's take on Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra", has been played for decades and wfll continue to be heard loud and clear throughout the centuries.
