TN: Let me go ahead and pay my homage now. I personally think that you are a phenomenal talent. You are the prime example that not all good press is just hype. I, personally, am a HUGE fan. Having gotten that out of the way... What are the current happenings in the life of up and coming folk-rock superstar Sonia Leigh?
SONIA: First of all, thank you very much! A girl can't get too much adulation. As far as whats goin on, I?ve been focusing on finalizing up some dates and festivals for the summer. I?ve also been working on my next record out in LA with a producer by the name of Marshall Altman. We're in the process of shopping around for the right record company. You know, someone that?ll be the right fit and do the right things. And I?ve been doing a lot of traveling.
TN: That gets expensive, doesn't it?
SONIA: Yeah, it really gets to diggin? in your pockets, but it takes that you know. Have you ever read the book 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad'? Pretty much you have to spend money to make money, so sometimes you have to eat it for awhile and hope it pays off in the end.
TN: Tell us about the cruise.
SONIA: It was so cool! It was called the 'Gimme Three Days Cruise'. There were a lot of cool bands and musicians. There was the Zack Brown Band, Lynyrd Skynard, Sister Hazel, Blackberry Smoke, Corey Smith and a lot more. We went to the Bahamas for three or four days. I got to hang out and play with a lot of really cool people. On the last night of the cruise I was set up by the casino, I wasn't on the biggest stage you know, because I'm a newer artist. but everybody that was coming out of the Lynard Skynard concert had to walk by us, and I had invited everybody to come by and play. It ended up being like an all night jam session with all the musicians on the boat. I swear we played all night until the boat docked about 7 the next morning.
TN: The review I read said you stold the show! I saw where you were doing some dates with Corey Smith.
SONIA: Yeah, I did a show with him at the Variety. It was probably the biggest crowd I ever played for.
TN: What have you got coming up locally, as far as dates go?
SONIA: Locally? Mmmmm I'm playing 37 Main in Buford with Levi Lowery March 8th, and we?re doing a Comcast Bands on Demand show at Smiths old Bar in Atlanta, and on April 12th we're doing a real big show at the Five Spot. Our goal right now is to sell that one out.
TN: If everything goes the way you want it to go, where do you see yourself in a year?
SONIA: Well I'm hoping by then we've found a label that's right for me and I'd really like to be on the road touring. When I say we, I'm referring to Levi, my right hand man. He is a phenomenal musician and songwriter in his on right and I'm lucky to have him with me. I'm just really excited about the future. Everything just keeps getting better and better, you know?
