Beyond the forced cut-and-paste sound of many mixed genre musical groups there's Sonic Death Rabbit, a unique and fluid example of no-boundaries composition. Starting from a mostly experimental electronic and metal background, Derrick Estrada, better known as Baseck, and Cristina Fuentes combine their influences to create their self explained "GameBoylovemetalsynthgrind".
Baseck has been well respected for over a decade throughout the United States and Europe as a creative and precise experimental turntablist. Originally from Los Angeles County he regularly flew to the Midwest to play with acts like Doormouse and Venetian Snares and eventually settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a few years. While living there he was given his first modified GameBoy as a gift along with the program Little Sound DJ and has been hooked ever since.
Cristina's love for low-fi 80's influenced synth and video game music along with her experience and as the lead vocalist for a Southeastern hardcore band have brought a more traditional song structure base to their group. She first contacted Baseck by e-mailing him about possibly doing some artwork for his albums, only to fly out five days later to form Sonic Death Rabbit with him and play their first show in May of 2004.
Using GameBoys, synths, low-fi keyboards, scratching, and anything else they can get their primitive electronic hands on, they surpass their own technical categorization. Although they are included within the emerging genre of eight-bit GameBoy music, they break all preconceptions about their low-tech approach by creating their own kits with a full breadth of surprisingly resonant samples. Their GameBoys pump out more than just the retro Nintendo sound. Their samples consist of anything from classic breaks to the dirtiest gabber kicks any retro gamer could ever imagine coming out of a GameBoy Color. They specialize in manipulating sub-genres of electronic music such as breakcore, hardcore, industrial and IDM, by blending their most recognizable sounds and rhythms in their own care free style. Never going under 120 BPM, their disjointed and sometimes very noisy beats are balanced out by euphoric and melodic synth lines that can easily turn on the listener to harsh noise and vicious bass. Both members contribute to the vocals with screaming and singing and their lyrics resemble a kind of crude yet playful Dadaism.
Mostly known for their extremely energetic live shows suited in deranged bunny costumes and day glow colored executioner's hoods, Sonic Death Rabbit fully dedicates themselves to each and every show and bring nothing less than the vast range of joy and brutality that can be expected from their name. Since their couch surfing beginnings in Milwaukee and onto their move to Los Angeles, CA where they are currently based out of, their live reputation has carried them far. It has put them on stage with acts such as, Autechre, Richard Devine, Cylob, Bogdan Raczynski, Meat Beat Manifesto, R.A.W., Daedelus, and Otto Von Schirach to name a few. Because of their versatile sound, they have been persistently booked with many different kinds of venues, festivals and acts, both electronic and non-electronic.
