Welcome to the first of what we hope will be many Sonic World Festivals held in the Derbyshire, The Heart of England.
This year we, Jane and Dr Hasbeen, are delighted and proud to present some of the finest Rock and Psychedelic acts in the UK.
Jane, still having some friends in the music scene, and organizational and Public Relations Skills,put out a call to arms for bands to play for expenses only, for that is all she could hope to offer. A local venue was found which would accommodate a festival for a low fee, and the wheels began to turn.
As she is a single parent with no income, and thus prevented from running the money side of things, she gave the financial handling over to Martyn Needham (Dr Hasbeen), because he had a job and could earn without the profiteers and middle men wading in and taking it over.
The idea was to stick to the ethos of the free festivals as closely as possible, to ensure that the performers received 100% of profits for their own work, which they are encouraged to merchandise themselves.
The performers are encouraged to retain their copyrights to music, visual performance and image without straying into capitalist territory, to safeguard their hard work for just two days out of the year ..... this, is the ethical standpoint of the Sonic World Festival 2008.
Of course, this decision proved controversial in these profit-led times, and has led to some dissent, not, it has to be said, from our own performers, but from outside influences.
Our aim is to keep the festival small, to maintain the intimate vibe and strive for the best bands and comfort of everyone attending. We started with 400 tickets and they are selling fast. We've had interest from more wonderful musicians than we can accommodate! Much more of this and SWF2009 will be on the drawing board! Thanks to everyone who wants to play. And to all the artists who are involved, to keep the ethos of the festival flying high, we must all stand as one.
