SONOS – a new LA-based alternative vocal group – produces a unique sound that blurs
the genre line, garnering them fans from alternative, mainstream and vocal music worlds
alike.
Jessica Freedman, Christopher Harrison, Kathy Hoye, Ben McLain, Paul Peglar, Nicolette Robinson and Cynthia Wennstrom make up this intriguing collective. Each of the
members resonates with their own unique vocal style, evidenced on stunning
reinterpretations of less than obvious material.
The a cappella world has long been known for its great enthusiasm – as well as, less fortunately, unadventurous song choices and arrangements: the goal of the 19-25 year-old UCLA students and graduates who comprise Sonos is to raise the bar, push the envelope and help to redefine a genre.
Sonos was first heard Fall '07 when Barnes & Noble released the first of its exclusive
SundayMusic series. The group was featured on Volume One, singing with rising Epic
Records star Sara Bareilles on an exclusive vocal version of her finest track “Gravity.” Produced by film/tv composer and songwriter Gabriel Mann, the group will release their
first album later this year.
The repertoire offers no limitations on style or genre. Tackling alt heavy hitters like
Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley and Bjork, they also interpret gentler modern classics by
artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Imogen Heap and Fleet Foxes.
Live shows begin this winter – with beat boxing, soaring vocals, layered harmonies and
highly unusual arrangements, Sonos brings to the stage elements of traditional a cappella music -- with a post-modern twist.
