| Genel | writing, Buddhism, universal health care. Other things I like: unintended and unanticipated positive consequences from things that seem very negative at the time, office supply stores, the smell of libraries, people who understand how their own heads work even after the fact, olives, vinegar, unlimited nights and weekends calling plans, job- and craft-specific jargon, the look of someone's face in the midst of concentration on a task, to-do lists as long as they are actually doable, putting to-don'ts on to-do lists, garage sales, Radishes with salt. Awareness. Postage stamps. Patience. Knee-high black boots. Detachment. Senescence. Loud guitar moving from minor to major keys. Magazine subscriptions. 12/13/06: red-wing blackbirds and starlings. Zinc. Flinching. 2/13/07: Verterbrae and the spaces between them. Mirror neurons. I want to, but I can't. I don't want to, but I will. Skeeball. Lilacs. Tin roofs. Stuffed grape leaves. Clogs. Sharpie markers. Botanists (I don't know any, but I like the idea of them). Skin, your largest organ. Origami paper (not to make origami, just to write on). Old cathedrals. Scarred hands. Warehouses. Pinball. Welding. Having time to read a whole book in a day, and having a book that good. Olive-pimento loaf. Anchovies. Learning to say nothing when the situation calls for it. Dry erase boards. Cypress knees. | | Müzik | Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar, Tim Easton, Lucinda Williams, Erykah Badu, Bruce Springsteen, The Replacements, Son Volt, Beth Orton, Joan Jett | | Filmler | An Inconvenient Truth; Friends with Money; old Hal Hartley movies like "Trust"; Goodbye, Lenin; The Godfather; Wayne's World | | Televizyon | All I watch these days is Spongebob.

Writing Stuff:
My first book of fiction & creative nonfiction, Opa Nobody, is out from University of Nebraska Press. The main story is about my grandfather, who was an anti-Nazi activist in Germany in World War II. I talk to him, imagine his life, and try to make sense of mine (unsuccessfully, of course).
Textbook on writing and research, "The Backwards Research Guide for Writers," forthcoming from Equinox Books (London, 2009)
My writing also appears in these anthologies, journals, and magazines through the kindness of wise and merciful editors who have taught me how to write...
Mama Ph.D.: Women Write about Motherhood and Academia, ed. Elrena Evans and Caroline Grant (Rutgers University Press, 2008)
New (1/1/08): "Lakeview Cafe" in Sub Lit #3
Anthologies from Seal Press:
Literary Mama: Reading for the Maternally Inclined
Bare Your Soul: A Thinking Girl's Guide to Enlightenment
Young Wives' Tales: New Adventures in Love and Partnership
From University of Arizona Press:
Learning To Glow: A Nuclear Reader, ed. John Bradley
Essays in: Chronicle of Higher Education, Washington Post Magazine, Kaleidoscope, Fourth Genre, Topic, Sub-Lit, Hotel Amerika, Oxford Magazine
Journalism in: Psychology Today, In These Times, Labor Notes, Sojourner, Earth Island Journal, etc.
Fiction in: Passages North, Buffalo Carp
