We at the Bester Appreciation Society (Eastcote ) B.A.S.(E.) are very excited .Some months ago our Hon Chair, Mr Brian Harris , was rummaging around in the loft of the old Street family house in Northwood-now owned by Mr Cudleigh Budley-Wudlington-the site of our recently erected Blue Plaque -when he discovered a dusty and degraded 1/4" E.M.I. tape.
Imagine the delight when the tape was played as it revealed 2 lost songs . Both were obviously recorded from old acetates of Archie Bester's performances and are rather scratchy and fluttery .
The first was an out-take of the Shepherds Bush Empire show of the 16th of September 1960 .The song "I don't want a Doodle-Bug dropping on my Head " was probably omitted due to considerations of time .
The second song is an extremely rare recording from the I.T.V. show
" Aren't We Crazy "
-from april 1962 -a few months before his unfortunate demise-a performance of "I'd rather have a nice Cup of Tea ". Archie swears (mildly for these modern times ) during his rendition and you can hear the shock and disappointment in the children's exclamation .
The show's producer has added various sound effects which are amusing .However one must question the selection of a song which has over sexual references for a performance on a children's show.
