1993 – (2000) – 2007: THE STORY SO FAR...
Coming out from the experience with the Milan-based combo Maze at the end of 1992, Fede-rico Oddone wants to set up a project that carries the torch of old-school italian hardcore. The legacy of the time spent with Maze took the form of concerts shared with bands such as Disper-azione and Atrox, plus the recording of a split 7” with Permanent Scar (Inaudito Records). And aside from that, the drummer for Maze was the same Fulvio that played with Crash Box in the “Finale” LP, which was another factor that fueled in Fede-rico the will to keep on the glorious tradition of italian hardcore. So, in 1993, he assembles a first line-up with Loppo (squatter of Piazza Bonomelli’s Virus and bass player for Klasse Kriminale in their “Costruito in Italia” 7” EP) and Bundi (first, unparalleled drummer of Crash Box). A mutual taste in music and the will to go fast brings them to draft a handful of songs. The first important change in the line-up sees Diste, who’s destined to become a key figure in the band, joining up on bass. Shortly thereafter he gets in touch with Mayo (vocals), while Fede-rico recruits Mauro, the energetic drummer of Mudhead. SOTTOPRESSIONE are now officially born.
Between improvised gigs and constant troubles, the four are able to enter the studio in the first months of 1994. Helped out by Sanatana (guitar for GHCP), they manage to record live and in just three hours an advance tape containing eight tracks, including cover versions of Negative Approach and Suicidal Tendencies. At the end of 1994, thanks to the aforementioned tape, Giorgio Senesi (now of Love/Hate80) releases the band’s 7” EP “E’ il Momento” (Mele Marce Rec.): four tracks of fast and fresh italian hardcore with streaks of East Coast sound. Recorded and mixed in about 10 hours by the skilled Paolo Mauri (Afterhours, Casino Royale, Extrema, Punkreas, Ritmo Tribale, Shandon…), the single sports also an explicit sleeve design born from the long lasting friendship with Stiv “Rottame” Valli (TVOR ’Zine – Rec.). After a few shows, Rudy Medea (Indigesti – Vacation House Rec.) notices the strong live impact of the band, and after a crowded and energetic live set he offers the guys a deal that results in the self titled debut album, recorded in the first months of 1996 by the usual Paolo Mauri with the help of Livio Magnini (soon to be guitarist of Bluvertigo). That first full length sees the very young and amazing Kuku join in on drums and contribute to the evolution of the sound, now much more mature than before. The production puts a certain emphasis on the impressive sound of the guitar, but without altering the overall equilibrium. The idea of the anvil on the front cover comes once again from Stiv Valli during one of the usual nice afternoon chats at New Zabriskie Point, as to symbolize the tight bond between the old and the new italian hardcore scene. The critics greet them with open arms because of the blend between original composition, well-established italian roots (Negazione, Raw Power and Indigesti), and some New York reference.
In the spring of 1996 the newcomer Kuku leaves the band unexpectedly, and he's replaced by Luca (who later on will join Jinx, Minnie's and Maze) who plays some shows until the autumn of the same year, when he and Mayo decide to leave the band.
Their place is quickly taken by the italo-swedish Enrico “Puglia” De Candia (on vocals) and Dario “Crema” Cremonesi (very technical and fast drummer). They blend in immediately, the harmony is great, and the four get off to a flying start with Fede-rico and Enrico working very closely on writing new songs, looking for new solutions.
Their second album, “Così Distante”, is released at the beginning of 1998, again on Vacation House Rec. and again with Paolo Mauri on recording duties. The record is short, nervous, hectic, made of constant changes and strenuous stop&go. The lyrics are more and more inmost of feelings and desperate, and cryptically hold the real life stories of the band during that frantic and dense year of composition and sharing. “Così Distante” brought a flattering series of positive comments, lots of gigs and an even bigger following, quickly becoming the best selling title for Vacation House Rec. who later on will reissue the self-titled album and the “E’ il Momento” 7” EP on CD format.
Two years pass, and the scenery changes. SOTTOPRESSIONE decide to step out of the way of pure hardcore to walk, not without trouble, the path of post-hardcore and noise-rock. They compose ten new songs, and Vacation House Rec. fixes a catalogue number for the album without even waiting for it to be recorded, the artwork is almost finished anyway, and the title has already been chosen (“Il Capitano”). Of those ten songs only four can be stylistically defined hardcore (among them maybe the best track SOTTOPRESSIONE have ever written, “Dio solo sa che fine ho fatto”), but the equilibrium is now broken, and the guys find themselves in a hybrid and fuzzy time…
In the meantime a couple tracks are taken out of this ghost album and recorded for two compilations: “Altrove (256 proposizioni)” appears on “Tracce”, the first release of Wallace Records (with One Dimensional Man, A Short Apnea, Six Minute War Madness, Jinx, etc.) in 2000, while in 2001 the already posthumous and unconsciously appropriate “Cenere e Simboli d’Autunno” appears on “Uncage Your Punk Side” (with Raw Power, Punkreas, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, Derozer, Moravagine, Porno Riviste, etc).
December 2000: the fuzzy and hybrid moment crystallizes. The band, after SEVEN STRENUOUS YEARS, splits up after a series of disappointing rehearsals. A quick round of phone calls doesn’t bring any hope, so everything ends like this, with just a few words exchanged…
April 2007: SOTTOPRESSIONE are back to play fast again, ready to embark in a tour that will touch all of the italian peninsula. The chance springs from the highly demanded repress of their entire catalogue, which has been out of print for too much time. They’re back in the line-up that saw them parting ways, coherent to what Fede-rico, Diste, Dario and Enrico told each other in that winter of seven years ago: “…if it will be again, we will start from where we left off…”.

Fuoriuscito dai milanesi MAZE alla fine del 1992, Fede-rico Oddone vuole creare un progetto che porti il testimone dell’hardcore old school italiano. Dell' esperienza Maze rimane la condivisione del palco con gruppi come Disper-azione e Atrox, nonché la realizzazione dello split 7” con i Permanent Scar (Inaudito Records). Nei Maze suonava Fulvio, batterista per i Crash Box di “Finale”: un'altro fattore che ha alimentato la voglia del nostro di raccogliere il testimone e continuare la gloriosa tradizione dell'HC italiano.
Fede-rico assembla così, ad inizio 1993, una prima line-up con Loppo (occupante del Virus di Bonomelli e basso per i Klasse Kriminale dell’EP 7” “Costruito in Italia”), e Bundi (primo, impareggiabile e pirotecnico batterista dei Crash Box). Ascolti condivisi e la voglia di andare veloci, li portano ad imbastire una manciata di brani. Un primo avvicendamento importante è l'ingresso al basso di Diste, destinato a diventare un personaggio chiave del gruppo: a breve Diste contatta Mayo (voce), mentre Fede-rico recluta Mauro, energico drummer dei Mudhead. Ora nascono i SOTTOPRESSIONE.
Tra concerti improvvisati e costanti intemperie, i quattro entrano in studio nei primi mesi del '94. In tre ore, aiutati da Sanatana (chitarra dei GHCP), i SOTTOPRESSIONE registrano in presa diretta un advance tape di otto brani, tra cui alcune cover di Negative Approach e Suicidal Tendencies. Grazie al nastro in questione, sul finire del 1994, Giorgio Senesi (ora Love/Hate80) pubblica per la band l’EP 7” “E’ il Momento” (Mele Marce Rec.): quattro tracce di veloce e fresco hard-core italiano con venature sonore della East Coast. Registrato e mixato in 10 ore dal sapiente Paolo Mauri (Afterhours, Casino Royale, Extrema, Punkreas, Ritmo Tribale, Shandon…), il singolo beneficia anche di una esplicita copertina nata dalla lunga amicizia con Stiv “Rottame” Valli (TVOR ’Zine – Rec.).
Dopo alcuni concerti Rudy Medea (Indigesti – Vacation House Rec.), nota l’impatto della band dal vivo e, dopo un affollato e partecipato live set, propone al gruppo una collaborazione da cui scaturisce nei primi mesi del 1996 l'omonimo album d'esordio, registrato ancora da Paolo Mauri, stavolta coadiuvato da Livio Magnini (di lì a breve chitarra dei Bluvertigo). Il primo omonimo full length segna l'ingresso in formazione del giovanissimo e strabiliante Kuku (batteria), che contribuisce all'evoluzione del suono ora decisamente più maturo. La produzione enfatizza il suono imponente della chitarra senza per questo minacciare l'equilibrio complessivo. L’idea dell’incudine in copertina scaturisce, ancora, da Stiv Valli e da una delle solite chiacchierate pomeridiane da New Zabriskie Point, a simboleggiare a pieno un sodalizzato legame tra la vecchia e la nuova scena HC italica. La critica li accoglie a braccia aperte grazie alla commistione tra originalità compositiva, consolidati riferimenti italiani (Negazione, Raw Power ed Indigesti), e influssi newyorkesi.
Nella primavera del 1996 il nuovo entrato Kuku abbandona improvvisamente la band, che trova il suo sostituto in Luca (poi in forze anche con Jinx, Minnie's e Maze), suonando con loro per diversi concerti fino all’autunno del medesimo anno, periodo in cui lui e Mayo lasciano il progetto. Subentrano così di seguito l'italo-svedese Enrico “Puglia” De Candia (alla voce), e Dario “Crema” Cremonesi (batterista tecnico e veloce). L’amalgama è immediata, l’affiatamento pure e i quattro ripartono di slancio con Fede-rico ed Enrico che lavorano a stretto giro di gomito alla composizione dei brani nuovi, ricercando nuove soluzioni.
Ad inizio 1998 esce, ancora per Vacation House Rec. e sempre registrato da Paolo Mauri, il secondo album “Così Distante”. Un disco breve, nervoso e frenetico, fatto di continui cambi e intensi stop&go. Le liriche, sempre più intimiste e disperanti racchiudono, criptate, le vicende di vita vissuta di quel forsennato, e denso, anno di condivisione e composizione dei quattro. “Così Distante” si porta appresso una lusinghiera serie di commenti positivi, parecchi concerti ed un seguito ampliato diventando il best seller della Vacation House Rec., che successivamente ristamperà il precedente S/T e l’EP 7” “E’ il Momento” in versione CD.
Passano due anni, e muta lo scenario: i SOTTOPRESSIONE abbandonano l'hardcore puro e percorrono, non senza difficoltà, le correnti del post-hardcore e del noise-rock. Compongono 10 brani e, senza attenderne la registrazione, Vacation House Rec. gli assegna il numero di catalogo, le grafiche del resto sono quasi pronte e così anche il titolo (“Il Capitano”). Dei 10 pezzi solo 4 restano ancora stilisticamente hard-core (tra cui forse il miglior pezzo mai composto dai SOTTOPRESSIONE, “Dio solo sa che fine ho fatto”), ma l'equilibrio si è rotto, i nostri si ritrovano in un momento ibrido e sfocato…
Dal disco fantasma vengono nel frattempo estratti e registrati due brani, comparsi su altrettante compilation: nel 2000 “Altrove (256 proposizioni)” su “Tracce”, numero 001 della Wallace Records (con One Dimensional Man, A Short Apnea, Six Minute War Madness, Jinx, etc.), e infine, nei primi mesi del 2001, la già postuma e inconsciamente azzeccata, “Cenere e Simboli d’Autunno” su “Uncage Your Punk Side” (con Raw Power, Punkreas, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, Derozer, Moravagine, Porno Riviste, etc).
Dicembre 2000: il momento ibrido e sfocato cristallizza. Il gruppo si scioglie dopo 7-ANNI-INTENSI, all'indomani di una serie di sessions in sala prove non del tutto soddisfacenti. Uno sterile giro di telefonate non lascia quindi speranze, e tutto viene chiuso così, con poche parole…
Aprile 2007: i SOTTOPRESSIONE tornano per suonare ancora veloci, affrontando un tour che toccherà tutta la Penisola. L'occasione nasce dalla necessaria ristampa dell'intero materiale registrato, fin da troppo tempo fuori catalogo. Tornano nella line-up con cui si sono sciolti, in linea con ciò che si erano detti Fede-rico, Diste, Dario ed Enrico in quell’inverno di 7-ANNI fa: “…se mai sarà ancora, ripartiremo da dove noi ci siamo fermati…”.

HARDCORE PROJECT MILANO 2009/10 ciao regà..vi posto un progetto che potrebbe interessare qualcuno sulla scena hardcore di milano: "Il nostro progetto va oltre il fattore musicale.Con l'aiuto del collettivo del cox 18(csoa conchetta milano) vogliamo dar spazio alla scena hardcore milanese ormai alla deriva. Il nostro obbiettivo consiste: -nel dare spazio alle giovani band italiane e non. -far avvicinare o semplicemente far conoscere a tutti le sottoculture vicine a questo genere come l'autoproduzione, il veganesimo, l'animalismo etc.. -promuovere la cultura del do it yourself(DIY) e l'autoproduzione in genere -far avvicinare le persone al centro sociale e alle sue iniziative -permettere alle persone di conoscersi e socializzare Le modalità per portare a buon fine questo progetto sono un pò: -innanzitutto testare il progetto con 1 o 2 serate -a progetto testato organizzare 1 serata mensile dedicata all'hardcore e non solo -nel preconcerto organizzare cene vegan(può essere un'idea!) e banchetti animalisti oppure mostre e presentazione di libri, prendendo spunto dall'esperienza dello sga di Arese -eventualmente organizzare un collettivo specifico che si occupi in articolare di questo progetto". questa cosa era già passata in cox ma per vari motivi compreso lo sgombero s'era dovuto rimandare..per chi fosse interessato a darci una mano con tutta la buona volontà e qualche sbattimento è il benvenuto!potete aggiungermi su myspace www.myspace.com/jailbirdhc ps:siamo disponibilissimi per ulteriori chiarimenti per mail. c'è davvero bisogno di una mano!HELP US!
