Started by Matt, Jon and Squib in the city of Oxford, Soulcraft was a lot of talk for a fair few months, existing solely on the phone with Matt Begging the others not to give up on him, as he tried to find a guitarist and a room for them to play.
and this ended when a number was found in a witney shop, Rob Joined the trio and brought his love of hardcore and classic rock together with jons love of Funk rock and classic metal, while Squibs indie influence and pop sensibility completed what would be an interesting new sound.
in the years that followed Soulcraft Played around Oxford, building a small but loyal fan and friend base most of which continue to this day. They were good times. Soulcraft recorded their first demo, played some more, then realised that the songs couldn't be faithfully represented live anymore so a second guitarist was sought. Matt Peek joined, as a school friend of Matt Barlow's he was an obvious choice and cemented his own style and solid playing. the band continued playing live getting better all the time and writing new material. They then recorded a new demo being of a more polished sound and a greater confidence (which is the music on this site.). the band courted many a&r and the demo made it to the board of directors at mca but never "made" it. Squibs decision to go to university nearly split the band but the reluctance of the band members to give up drove them to replace what was thought of as irreplaceable. More months passed as the band struggled to even find a drummer let alone audition one, several were tried out and eventually Ed was found.
Eds musically trained background and love of drum n' bass and Led zeppelin bought a new dimension to the band, one of a flowing rythmical mantra sound technically more advanced. ultimately though musical differences got in the way and Soulcraft folded. Months later Squib who was back from university suggested reforming but by that time Matt Barlow's stage fright became too much to perform and he again folded the band after only a few shows.
during those 5 or so years the band made many friends, saw many changes not only in themselves but in the Oxford Music scene as venues closed down due to brewery decisions and Truck festival was started. they had seen many bands come and go, go nowhere or change their names and if all that failed start their own record labels. This then is a document for us in the band to say all that time meant something and now more than ever before can we finally reach the people we wanted to. To allow people to be affected by the music as it affected us, that we put our hearts our souls and our pain and joy into these songs seems profound now when we think back on a name; Soulcraft, that hadn't really meant anything. but its ultimately what I think we produced. Hope you enjoy so we can make new friends and share our music. Matt Barlow

Matt - you have missed out an important part of the Soulcraft band members' history! Both Squib and Jon went on to be in the Stars of Track and Field...or perhaps you have left this out for a reason! Great page - where's the tunes? Get them up! Also, I seem to remember a really good review by an 'anonymous' critic in that oracle of great writing, Orbit magazine...get that on here too!
