Band Member Bio's... Steve Nevets... Bass and Vocals I didn't start life as a bass player. In 5th grade I wanted too but wound up playing trumpet. I first sang in front of people when I was 11 years old. The project in Chicago I lived in had a bunch of guys who had a band and I was listening one day and they were doing a Lou Rawls tune "Dead End Street" and I happened to be humming the song under my breath and they heard me and asked me to sing it... I did and they loved it and wanted me to join the band. It scared the heck out of me so I never went back. I was shy as a kid... go figure. I finally got a bass when I was 14 for Christmas to play for this guitar player I met named John Collier. It took 4 years to be good enough to do that and the rest is history as they say. I have always had a philosophy of "be the weakest link in the band and learn the most, learn from everyone, play anything and everything". This has allowed me to have a large body of experience and music to draw from. When I was 18 I played in a band called "STAR" that rehearsed 4 hours a night, 5 nights a week for a year. We had a great time!! I'll always remember those guys. That is still paying dividends for me to this day. I have had the good luck to play music with some of coolest musicians in the Chocagoland area over the years. The good Dr. Eddie McLellan, My FRIEND. Fast Break, The Average Wedding Band, The Fast Lane Guitar Brothers Almost Rhythm and Blues Band, (My 1st good band That people wanted to play music with me as a grown up. Thanks guys for letting me drive and being there!), Bobby Scumaci, Julie Miller, Jack Skalon, Geoff Lowe, Mark Ott , Chris Mosher, and the list goes on and on. And now after years of thinking about it.... SOULed Slaves. The new band and direction for me. These guys who are on board are from my past and my present. And Again they're letting me drive.... W-O-W My 2nd good band and people still want to play music with me. I am lucky.....AGAIN!! Steve Torres... Guitar and Vocals Steve Torres; AKA: Reno Von Gitbox, has been playing guitar actively in the Chicago circuit for over 25 years. It's been a long, strange trip for Steve. "I've been influenced by absolutely everyone, and every type of musician too. People have told me that they've recognized players' styles in my playing that I've heard but not really studied. I really appreciate that. But if I had to choose... I would say the major influences would be the "Trinity". You know, Clapton, Beck and Page. But you can't overlook anyone. Everyone and everything you hear should effect your playing in some way." "I've been very lucky in my musical life to have played with, and met some really great musicians. Pros to beginners... Friends forever! The Chicagoland area has such a wealth of artistic talent. Thanks for letting me ride along." "Now... SOULed Slaves! These guys are a blast to jam with. It's amazing how everything just falls into place when the notes start flying!", Steve says. "The overall sound of the band is what I'm most concerned with. To me, it's a sum of all the parts. It's about everyone adding something to the stew. If something is missing, you can taste it." Mike Coyle... Guitar and Vocals Mike got his first guitar at 14 after hearing Eddie Cockrin's Summertime Blues. That led to records by Robert Johnson, The Yardbirds, Cream, John Mayall, etc. Although the Blues has always his major influence, he's played almost everything with many of bands over the years. Still, he tries to find time to "Sit In" at the blues clubs and learn from the "Masters". Mike takes bits and pieces of what he's heard other guitarists do and puts them where he thinks they'll work. "Every time I listen to another guitar player, I learn something. That constant input from others drives me to try new things". "I feel very lucky to be a part of SOULed Slaves. It is an incredible mix of style and energy. The first time we got together there was magic. Everything just fell into place." Mike thinks that it is this difference in backgrounds, melded together, that gives the band that "Special" sound. "Just enough of each, nobody in the way, just right." Joel Treadwell... Drums & Vocals Joel Treadwell; AKA: "Da Pocket", has been in the studio and on the road with such renown artists as R. Kelly and Tomi just to name a few. His tasteful yet commanding drive has powered many a dance floor. We are glad to have Joel as a driving force behind SOULed Slaves! Special Guest Artists Paul Coglianese... Drums Tony Dale...
