Music"Music -- music that moves you -- usually comes because something horrible has happened to you. It's cathartic. I think music does that better than almost any other art form, because most of our lives are about things that don't work out."

Books"Snow falling and night falling fast, oh, fast
In a field I looked into going past,
And the ground almost covered smooth in snow,
But a few weeds and stubble showing last.
The woods around it have it--it is theirs.
All animals are smothered in their lairs.
I am too absent-spirited to count;
The loneliness includes me unawares.

And lonely as it is that loneliness
Will be more lonely ere it will be less--
A blanker whiteness of benighted snow
With no expression, nothing to express.
They cannot scare me with their empty spaces
Between stars--on stars where no human race is.
I have it in me so much nearer home
To scare myself with my own desert places."

About me:
Hiya! For those who are interested, I originally hail from Knoxville, TN, but now reside in Atlanta. During the day, I work for Turner Entertainment... with Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, TCM, etc. At night, I play records for music-appreciating people at various venues in Atlanta. I spun with Shaun Duval for about 3 years, until his move to Kansas City. Nowadays, I spin mostly solo, and as part of the hybrid group Soulshape. Here are some mixes for all you good people...

Broke'n'Beat Radio/Winter Music Conference 2006 mix
2 hour mix from July 2005

And of course, the obligatory DJ bio:

Atlanta's most musically diverse DJ, Chris Grass (Downrock/Soulshape) has become well known for his imaginative, melodic performances and impeccable track selection. His sets are a melting pot of musical genres, flowing from cosmic electrofunk and atmospheric deep house to fiery Afro-Cuban brokenbeat grooves ...with a dash of dub and drum 'n' bass thrown in for added flavor! It is this inimitable style that distinguishes Chris from his contemporaries - an amalgamation of nearly three decades of musical influence, seamlessly held together by the common threads of funk, jazz and soul.    Firm in his belief that music be as spontaneous and dynamic as possible, Chris often incorporates percussionists, horn players, and vocalists into his live sets, adding a whole new layer of improvisation to the mix. Taking his cue from the new school of club DJs, Chris is well-versed in the idea that a DJ should not only entertain but educate as well...moving both mind and body in the process.

So there you go. I have been fortunate enough to have shared the stage with a number of musical luminaries (and some of my idols!)...here's the long list: The Egg (full band!),Kraak & Smaak, Jazzanova, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Toshio Matsuura, Jeremy "Ayro" Ellis, John Arnold, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Capital A, Bembe Segue, Motet, Domu, Daz-i-Kue (Bugz in the Attic), Afronaught, I.G. Hey Chris!

More than pleased to add you. It's funny, checking out your page and looking at the influences and mindset you have - I almost think, 'Hey! Thats me!' trippy, huh?

We're half a world away, and on the same page. So glad to see you throw BeatFanatic in the mix, he is so under-rated in so many DJ circles, when he is the man! Have you got any of his alias stuff? BeatConductor and DiscoConductor you can get through www.groovedis.com and they're so worth throwing in the mix some time..

If you're interested in hearing some more, you can check out my album on www.cdbaby.com/cd/bdubsongs to hear how it all goes in context, and what I'm into stylistically.

Glad you found me, and keep up your great work! The more people doing what you do - feeling AND educating - the better!
