Soul Grammar, the 5-piece band from San Antonio, TX, plays the music that compels us to “Get Up Offa That Thing.” Drawing primarily from well-known hits of the R&B and Hip-Hop genres, the band delivers hard-hitting dance music. Soul Grammar is led by two extremely talented and entertaining vocalists. Apollo Bradley's gritty vocals are featured prominently on songs like "Give Me One Reason" and "Hot in Herre." The smooth vocals on songs with higher ranges such as "Crazy" and "Killing Me Softly" are delivered by Jason Brown. The two are capable of leading a song individually or blending together in harmony as well as stepping out front for a choreographed dance break. The rhythm section, comprised of Jaime Ramirez (keyboards), James Phillips (bass) and Alex De Hoyos (drums), provides a strong musical foundation for maximum funk possibilities. The three have experience playing together in the blues band St. James Infirmary from 2005-2007. Jaime Ramirez, in addition to playing keyboards, provides rapping vocals on "Nuthin' But a G Thang" and "Gold Digger" to name a few, while Bass player James Phillips leads "It Wasn't Me" and "Ice Ice Baby." Soul Grammar plays a wide range of R&B hits from the 1960s to 2009, providing a fresh live music experience on the San Antonio scene that bridges the gap between a DJ and the typical cover band.
Soul Grammar was formed when Jaime, James and Alex invited Jaime's Magik Theatre co-worker Apollo Bradley to form a band with a truly unique set list that would consist of songs usually heard from a DJ as opposed to a live band. The lineup was completed when Jamie and Alex's Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity Brother, Jason Brown, was invited to join Soul Grammar, effectively extending the band's range of possible repertoire and providing Apollo with a partner to create planned dance routines. The result was a stronger Soul Grammar that combined music with dance for an all-in-one entertainment experience. In November 2009, Jaime Ramirez returns to the Ringling Bros. Circus touring band for a 3 month period while Soul Grammar welcomes DJ AJ to provide keyboards in his absence.
