    ...... The maxim “make it funky” defines Soul Minded’s primary aspiration as a band. With influences as diverse as James Brown, Van Morrison and Toots and the Maytals this should come as no surpise. Formed in 2006 by the trio of Remy and Miles Krumpak and Joey Massa, it soon expanded to include Matt Ross and Alphonse Hovsepian. This roster is augmented by various female duet vocalists (this position is currently held by Jordan Corey). Soul Minded at its most basic is a collection of individuals interested in working together to become professional musicians and better people. In this age of image and heavy iconography in the music industry, patrons no longer dance at concerts nor do bands produce songs that reverberate in the head of an educated youth. The music industry makes no attempt to connect with listeners on a personal level. Soul Minded is not shackled by these constraints: the band works hard to uplift our communities through positive, thoughtful, non-degrading music that people of all ages can listen to without reservation and feel uplifted. With a sound described as “thumping” by Doc of Oakland legendary Tower of Power, Soul Minded has brought commotion throughout the Southland for the last three years. Playing over 45 shows a year around California, Soul Minded continues to build an impressive resume. Between placing first in the Cal State Northridge Apollo Night competition and first in the UC Santa Barbara Battle of the Bands during the last year, things are certainly on the upswing for this young sextet. With over 50 years of combined musical training this should come as no surprise. With all the members between the ages of 19 and 22 their potential is unlimited. As Soul Minded began to be recognized through a series of live radio performances and constant gigging, influential patrons began to take notice. UC Santa Barbara granted Soul Minded complementary studio time in their professional facilities. A studio that has produced winners of multiple Grammys and Academy Awards also took an interest and ended up producing Soul Minded’s complete self-titled debut CD that will be available on March 1st 2010. Soul Minded recently received the honor of being named best UCSB band and will be opening the large Extravaganza concert on May 15th at Harder Stadium. Yet despite their upgraded status within the last year, Soul Minded continues to remain true to its core values, becoming involved with several local charities to produce concerts that promote real and lasting change such as Amnesty International, Invisible Children, The Surfrider Foundation, UCSB Environmental Affairs Board and Santa Barbara Relay for Life Cancer Society as well as participating in and organizing Open Mics to promote a musical community that includes rather than excludes people from the creative process. As in the case of Jack Johnson, Soul Minded is interested in creating a lifestyle that parallels our music and reflects our values rather than simply exploiting a single genre for financial gain: to write about a love that can make both male and female smile, to write of politics invariable hypocrisy and to bring the funk for the dancing feet, all while maintaining constant dialogue with and within their audience.
