SOULS REVIEWS 2006

BIG CHEESE MAG REVIEW - APRIL '06

Band - SOULS
Album - Gold Dust
Label - Sugar Shack
Rating - 4/5

Debut album from promising West Country noisemongers.

Thats not the most imaginative of band names, guys. But well forgive you, because youve made a very good debut album. Souls hail from Bristol, and deal in filthy, fuzzed up art-punk tunes in a Killing Joke vein: the opening White Noise is all seismic guitar riffs and raw vocals, and it sets the tone for the rest of the record.

Theres a few surprises here and there, though. Most notably, the melodic melancholy of Undone and the oddly addictive Desecrate (well its the closest they come to writing a catchy tune) and overall it rocks like a bastard. I wont waste your time! sneers vocalist Dean in Awakened but he neednt worry, as listening to Gold Dust is forty-odd minutes of your time well spent.

ROCKSOUND MAG REVIEW - APRIL '06

Band - SOULS
Album - Gold Dust
Label - Sugar Shack
Rating - 7/10

With vocals like gravel and irate guitars, Souls are no-frills, straightforward rock. Based in Bristol, their debut album Gold Dust arrives on local label Sugar Shack and is 10 tracks of driving riffs and growling vocals that sits somewhere between Therapy?, Quees Of The Stone Age and, occasionally, Clutch.

Opening with a blast of scuzzed-up, down-tuned rock, the suitably titled White Noise; sets the precedent. Free from pretension, Come Undone is reminiscent of Muse, but Idle Dream is where the album peaks. While most of the tracks are devoid of true invention, in this highlight they let loose with nearly six minutes of indulgent guitar solos and squalls of feedback. Not quite the finished product yet, but definitely worth checking out.

DEVIANT Rock Club - Brighton's #1 Rock Club!

Jul 10 2008 11:07 AM

THIS FRIDAY, DEVIANT GOES TO HELL! This is a night not to be missed!

Dress to impress and join us this Friday the 11th July as Deviant pays homage to the fiery abode of misery and torment. On entry, all those who demand “Open the gates of Hell” will receive a free Satanic Shot to begin their night of debauchery. For those that dare we will have a Satanic face painter to make you look the part and really set the scene.

As the night heats up you’ll be swept into the depths of Hell for a night you won’t soon forget.

We know you naughty beings like your alcohol, so we’ve devised some fiendish drinking games that definitely aren’t for the weak! Don’t let your sinful greed get the better of you though, you have a wickedly long night ahead of you yet.

We have the Hellish delight of entertainment from divine temptress and fire-breathing extraordinaire, Flame, who will indulge your wicked senses with a show of fire and flesh. Let her take you out of this world and into another, sinfully pleasing you with her erotic and fiery performance.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, we’ve also lowered the entry fee! For one night only entry will be just £3 for the entire night! And we’re staying open till the sinfully late hour of 5am, so that you can stumble out of our replication of Hell into the light of dawn. With all of these Devilish delights, we just hope you survive until then...

The New Root

Apr 20 2008 7:01 AM

Hi There - we haven't been in touch for a while.

Just to let you know about an extra-special New Root gig on Saturday 31st May @ The Croft, Bristol.

We're doing a headline set featuring Visual Projections from VJ James Bragg and everyone gets a FREE copy of our new 'Sick of Me' EP on the door. Venue Magazine described it as '...an extraordinary sound...a sort of power pop/goth/rock opera hybrid...the most exhilarating thing we've heard all week'.

There also support from Sally-Anne Langton - 'one of Bristol's most promising singer/songwriters' - plus Special Guests. All for £5. You can buy tickets in advance from www. thenewroot. com

Thanks and hopefully see you there on Sat 31st May!
