PRAXIS....Transmutation features Buckethead, Bill Laswell, DJ Disk of The Invisible Scratch Pickles, DJ Soul Slinger, DXT, and X-Men. Beneath the darkly subsonic bass of producer Laswell, the extreme style of guiterrorist mutant virtuoso Buckethead, and the turntable voodoo of DJ Disk, DJ Soul Slinger and DXT, Praxis represents an inspiring, at times mesmerizing, and often harrowing foray into lethal territory. Group improvisation, musical breadth, and sheer sonic assault are all pushed to their outer limits.

.............................................Humankind was born in the jungle garden of Eden in Ethiopia, on the African continent. This has not only biblical significance, but historic and anthropological relevance as well. We all come from the same place; our cultural and political circumstances are real only in our minds; we can all share the same love- one love. An incarnation of that love took place in the UK with the birth of the music of the nineties-jungle. In the early 1990s, MCs who were predominately Black and from the ragga scene, began to add their flavor to techno beats from the white dominated rave scene. This eclectic marriage of styles, roots and electronic music, laid the foundation for modern jungle. Jungle began as the integration of musical forms which came from a variety of cultural perspectives. The socio-economic mix of the London underground community fostered an environment which encouraged the intermingling of cultures and one love between all people. The natural evolution of this, musically, is jungle. The pioneers of UK jungle were Rebel MC, Ragga Twins, Shut Up and Dance and Two Bad Mice (Rob Playford). In July, 1991 underground white labels' records from these groups started showing up on the NYC dance scene. Fortunately, I happened to be in the right time at the right place and realized my responsibility to start playing and producing jungle. I first spun jungle at the infamous NYC dance club, the Limelight, at the major techno event called Future Shock. The Future Shock promoters didn't get jungle and shut me down. A year later, I helped to found NASA (a new, different kind of underground party) with db, Scotto, Jason Jinx and On-E. This became the first successful breakbeat party in America and launched the US jungle scene. The next major turning point for US jungle was a party called Jungle Warriors. This was the first big jungle event in Manhattan that brought together top junglists and live drummers (including Marque Gilmore). Here we learned and taught each other and changed the course of US jungle forever. Today in NYC, Koncrete Jungle (props to Mac and Kathy) and Egg (Liquid Sky posse) have maintained the tradition of NYC underground parties and are the weekly family gathering places for the NYC underground. These parties and others across the country have spawned the second wave of US junglists: Odi, Del Mar, Clear (TJ), MC Panic, Darkstar, Cassien, all based in New York City and others like Kingsize (Columbus, Ohio), Reflective Records (San Francisco, CA) and Dub Shack and JJ Jellybean (Chicago). As the scene grew Dara (from Ireland) and Beau joined the NYC posse and Diesel Boy (Pittsburgh), AK1200 (Florida), Karl K and MC Dub2 (from Philadelphia) among many, many others have all made valuable contributions to the US jungle scene. The publications: Jungalized and URB have played, and continue to play, the integral role of disseminators of information in jungle society. My proudest involvement in the US jungle scene was the creation of the first US jungle record label-Jungle Sky Records-which was founded specifically to support US jungle artists and the American jungle scene. Jungle music has become so sophisticated today that many styles have emerged: Ragga, Happy Hardcore, Drum and Bass and so-called Artcore (ambient, futuristic symphonies). From jazzy samples to industrial soundscapes, producers from all over the world are listening to and making music with jungle influences. US jungle is still in its infancy. The music is always growing, always evolving. New parties and new DJs and producers are pushing jungle in an ever increasing number of directions. With no established rules or musical formulas, the evolution of jungle will continue and provide the soundtrack for the end of the millennium. Shout out to the whole NYC Jungle Crew, the London Jungle Massive-you know who you are! I believe we are all blessed by Jah, regardless of color or opinion, jungle world, Ethiopia, one love, I believe....... -Carlos Soul Slinger
