Gunslinger is the brainchild of Alan Davey who formed the band in the late
seventies to play some kick ass rock 'n' roll. Joining the legendary
Hawkwind, Alan Davey was first relegated to a spot behind the stage
curtain playing slayer bass guitar to spice up the Hawksound in the
eighties. Much has happened since then and today he has grown to be a full
blown singer, songwriter and highly proficient bass player.. On Earthquake
In E Minor Alan Davey is ably supported by longtime friend Nigel Potter on
guitars and George Agent on drums.
A surprise from this British trio, which seems to care for nothing else
than playing loud heavy rock 'n' roll. What catches the attention
immediately is the totally retro production, with energy and all heaviness
present. Well, the band's music is affected by Hawkwind, Purple, Motorhead
and Zeppelin.
This is a very strong album with very little filler and it keeps growing.
The opener “Night song” quickly sets the direction for the other 10 songs;
a driving and vigorous piece. A mean groove binds the song nicely
together, this one must work quite well in a live setting. “If the bombs
don’t get ya, the bullets will” is one of the albums fastest cuts and also
one of the best. The driving bass guitar takes a leading role and
intensity is a key word, a great tight swinging approach making its
important contribution to a very successful composition. “Going in for the
kill”, “Don’t need you” and “Gunslinger” are pounding motormount songs,
readily reassuring us that the band's appetite is just as sharp now as it
ever was.
Three words describe this album perfectly:
Fresh, catchy and unpretentious
