MICK LOWERY.... singer, songwriter, guitars, band leader. I dunno when exactly Mick started playing, sometime back before the Spanish Revolution I think, but there is no understating the fact of his somewhat iconic status in the Melbourne music scene. The fact that I've gotta update these details as soon as he gives me the new ones makes it easy to just dream up any old thing and make him sound fabulous. Because he is! I first knew him as a member of the legendary Dog Food, since which he has continued to produce fine music all over town, much of it his very own, and I consider it an honour to play with this man. Andy.
ANDY MARSHALL.... bass, vocals, general dogsbody. Andy first picked up the bass in high school and seems to have become permanently grafted onto it. He may be known to many as house bass player at the famous Wild Turkey jam nights for many years at the Micawber Tavern in Belgrave, fantastic live music venue that it is. He has also found himself playing in many bands, beginning with GAJ, Gypsy Moon and was the last bass player of the fabulous Baits, Delta Speed Deluxe and the Fender Benders, and is still the bassman and main guitarist for Cherry Ripe and the Wagon Wheels. He is thus a slut and stoked to be so!
PAUL SPEARS.... drums, P.A., screams and tapdancing. Has been a part of the Ranges music scene since time immemorial as drummer extraordinaire (he started bashing things when he was 12) and sound man for more bands than even he can remember, The Cringe City Cowboys, Fat Freddie, Ascension, Disco Biscuit, The Aaron Burton Band and the Unmentionables with the incomparable Phil Smith just to name a few! It is through his dedication to perfection that we the Soul Surfers can produce recordings, albeit played a tad questionably(!), of such fine quality, all at Paul's own studio, P V Sounds. Russ Kellett of Channel 31 fame once seconded he and Andy to play in a band for the Lilydale show, still remembered to this day as one of the funniest things either of them has ever played. He is a fine drummer and we, the Soul Surfers, are lucky to have him.
ROLAND GRINSBERG.... keyboards, saxomophone, vocals. Roland is another one of those guys who has played in more bands and made more mess than anybody can keep a track of. An extraordinarily gifted keyboard and sax player, just ask anyone who has ever played with him and tried to keep up, not long after his tenure in the well-known Melbourne cover band Point Blank ended, we managed to poach him for the Soul Surfers. Knows where the bodies are buried!

The Soul Surfers is a re-convening of four madmen who have played together, seperately, jammed and generally made a mess throughout the Melbourne music scene for years now getting together to play the music of singer/songwriter Mick Lowery. This basically began when Mick took over the hosting of the long-running jam night at the Mt.Dandeneong Hotel, Olinda, and was forced against his better judgment into playing with sometime resident bass player and mess-maker Andy Marshall. This, somewhat surprisingly, worked a treat, so Mick went on to second first drummer/sound engineer Paul Spears, then local legend saxomophonist/keyboard player Roland Grinsberg, whose past life as an undertaker is always a source of fun. In an incredibly short time the whole thang gelled and came together, thus creating the damn fine musical event you're now reading about.

spoke to Janette and Alex. I understand benefits are going to the local CFAs here in the Dandenongs. An equally good cause especially after they did such a good job saving so much of FT Gully, Upwey, Tecoma and Belgrave recently.
All the best with it guys. I've got a cold so I'm gonna try and sleep it off if I can with plenty of lemon and some ginger and fingers crossed. Maybe you could do a show for cold relief and all the people with colds could come along :-)
