Sounds a bit bitter's journey began in 2006 as Juha Kreivi and Matias Aaltonen started to jam some songs together. They knew each other through their former bands and being musically active. Soon they discovered that their songs had potential, but they still needed a bassist to make the sound more solid. They asked Matias’ friend Mitja Välimäki to join them and after playing together for a while, they noticed that one guitar, drums and a bass were enough to make the songs work.
Each member of the band has an important role as an individual, but also as a builder of band’s unique sound. Juha’s guitar playing, charismatic singing and his attitude are the foundation of Sounds a bit bitter’s music. Meandering melodies and sometimes even self-invented chords are characteristic of Juha’s playing. Juha has an important role as the songwriter of the band but also as the singer. His presence and intensity are remarkable when performing for live audience.
Also Sounds a bit bitter’s drummer Matias has a versatile musical background, which can be heard in his playing. Matias combines his technical skills and sense of music in a way in which drums become more than the source of rhythm. Sounds a bit bitter’s songs leave space for Matias’ playing, and drum lines are often progressive and varying.
Sounds a bit bitter’s music is completed by Mitja’s bass playing, which combines traditional bass lines with guitar-like playing. This mixture of rhythm and melody is an essential part of the songs, considering that there is only one guitar player in the band. Mitja’s background as a guitarist can be heard in his skilful way of handling the 6-string bass.
Sounds a bit bitter’s name came up to describe the melancholic and rough sound of band’s music. Important musical influences named by all the members of Sounds a bit bitter are such bands as Tool, A Perfect Circle, Katatonia, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam.
