Sounds from the Other City's Blurbs
About me:
Well that was SFTOC 2008, one heavy, heavy day indeed - hot as hell with the showers of the apocalypse thrown in for good measure.

Started off with an almighty spanner in the works when the Egerton Arms pulled out at the last minute. But in the true spirit of this event we decided to up sticks and set up camp across the road at Salford Central Train Station. Bring on the Dancing Horses brought all their dancing horses with them and it all cantered along marvellously until Performance bucked at the final fence and simply didn't perform.

Meanwhile the rest of the day lubed up nicely, the ale flowed, the sweat poured and the running times went completely to pot. All the while the atmosphere was absolutely lovely.

Highlights of the day included the sound of Talibam! filling the entire street from top to bottom, David Thomas Broughton using anything in the vicinity of Sacred Trinity Church as his own instrument, Man Like Me proving that you can be cool and still have a laugh, Howlin Rain proving that you can remain in 1973 and still be cool, Seaming To's amazing pink dress and similarly amazing songs, Elvis & Amy's benidorm karaoke marathon, The Black Lion's Sangria and the sweat dripping off the the door all day in the Salford Arms

For a little look at what happened in and around the edges take a look here . Pictures courtesy of Andrew Brooks.

Adrian Northover is one of the finest saxophonists in the country. EYES come from Chicago and make glorious music for dancing that straddles the vibes of Ariel Pink and HEALTH. The type of band people might lie about having seen first time round once they make the cover of Plan B. You know, if they felt so inclined.

Skitanja, in spite of what the poster says, are actually from Bournemouth. They make scrappy, electronic bleep party pop music with guitar.

Shiu-Yeung Hui is the Chinese member of Japanese group Maher Shalal Hash Baz. He drinks quite a lot of neat vodka then takes to the stage to perform his wonderful, fractured, miniature songs using guitar and keyboard. An exercise in patience, an audience with Shiu pays off massively.

Elapse O are a death disco unit from Oxford. Imagine swimming the butterfly through a load of broken Swans LPs. That's what they sound like. Dig.

SPECTRE FOLK (Pete Nolan of Magik Markers) + JON COLLIN + NEIL BURRELL

It's extremely appropriate that Magik Markers' drummer Pete Nolan is currently in the country to play with Jandek in London (which is how this gig came about, coincidentally).
Because his solo Folk Spectre record on the Woodist label demonstrates a penetrating knowledge of what makes that great Texan loner so amazing. Lo-Fi in the early 90s Shrimper label sense (yes!), the record contains a clutch of fragile, skeletal songs that inspire a depth of relaxation self-help tape manufacturers could only dream of. Of course, we're not talking 'swimming with dolphins' here. It's the constant hum - of tape hiss, mellow feedback, room boom, whatever - that sits beneath these beautiful songs that gives them their dreamlike quality. The name has been switched around to Spectre Folk but the vibrations are the same.
The Folk Spectre record is something truly special and we anticipate this show to be one of the most enthralling of our 2008 calendar.

Here's what Pete's Magik Markers partner Elisa Ambrogio had to say about it all:

"Here drum-dilweed extraordinaire Pete Nolan takes on new dimensions of low-fidelity radness through the Woodsist imprint. The infamous label in charge of releasing other super-jammers such as Axolotl, Loosers and Blues Control, Woodsist put this mother out in the o 7. So many good songs, I don’t know where to start; it’s like Gene Clark in a manhole with Von LMO in Bushwick. This is another artist criminally unappreciated for his solo work, most probably due to his surly manner. Just ‘cause the man don’t hold doors for people doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to build castle bridges of strangeness into the void. LISTEN.

This is an unmissable show! After the rave reviews of Sam Amidon's last show in Manchester, where, in league with Red Deer Club, we arranged for Sam to play at the Unitarian Chapel with a string quartet, we couldn't wait for the opportunity to bring him back. Since that time, his album All is Well has been critically lauded and the media have finally caught on to the New Yorker's immense talent.

Incredibly, the opportunity that has arisen includes a touring party from Sam's Icelandic label, Bedroom Community. Sam will be performing with a six-piece band, including legendary producer and Bedroom Community chief, Valgeir Sigurðsson.

And if that isn't enough for you, Valgeir will also be performing tracks from his own album, Ekvílibríum, a critically lauded masterpiece of electronica-laced folk.

To cap it all, the night will be kicked off by support from Manchester's own acoustic-electronica maestro, Denis Jones; having waited two years to play in this wonderful venue, he will be playing his fourth show here inside two months, after support for Jack Rose, Phosphorescent and Chris Corsano.
