    soundvisions's Interests
GeneralMusic is my main thing, in many forms. I listen to music, I think about music, I make music, I work on other people's music, I talk about music, I sell music, and I write about music.

Also love the visual arts: painting, digital art, photography, sculpture and graphic design. I've been active in all the above except sculpture, and have done a bit of web design too (which I believe to be an art form when done properly).

I'm a bit of a techno-geek, and I employ many digital tools, both hardware and software, to facilitate my music and art. I use Windows some of the time out of necessity (managing a Windows and Unix network pays the bills), but when I have a choice, I use my Powerbook or my Powermac.

MusicRock & Pop: David Bowie, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Japan, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Smiths, Front 242, Cocteau Twins, Clan of Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Wolfgang Press, Kraftwerk, Ultravox, John Foxx, Gary Numan, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Cars, Devo (my favorite through much of the 80s), Talking Heads, Duran Duran (I may have the biggest Duran Duran CD collection of any male on earth), Pet Shop Boys (I may have the biggest Pet Shop Boys CD collection of any straight guy on earth), Bjork, Prince, Pink Floyd, Queen, Metallica, AC/DC up to 1983, early REM.

Electronic & Ambient: Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, Aphex Twin, Coil, Lustmord, Zoviet France, Rapoon, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Monolake, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Alio Die, Oophoi, Shuttle358, Komet, and of course all the artists on the Hypnos Recordings label.

Other: Also listen to the great mid-century singers (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Holliday), classical (especially Beethoven piano works and Bach cello stuff, plus assorted chamber music and a few of the obvious symphonies), jazz (Miles Davis especially, Kind of Blue in particular, but also Dave Brubeck and John Coltrane), soundtracks (Midnight Express and Cat People soundtracks were my biggest influences in getting started with electronic music), and a variety of uncategorizable, experimental stuff.

MoviesI worship & obsess over everything by David Lynch (especially Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks), and think he's the most fascinating creative mind currently active.

Also I really love Stanley Kubrick (everything from Paths of Glory right up until the end, esp. 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon) and Woody Allen (everything from Annie Hall to Crimes and Misdemeanors, and my favorite is Manhattan), plus Terry Gilliam (especially Brazil, also Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King, Time Bandits).

Recent favorite directors are David Fincher (Fight Club, The Game), Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, and Pi)

Have to mention The Godfather I and II, all three Lord of the Rings installments, mid-period Hitchcock such as Rear Window and Vertigo, The Matrix, Pixar animation stuff, Blade Runner, Animal House, Neighbors, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension, Big Trouble in Little China, Monty Python's "Big Three" (Meaning of Life, Holy Grail, Life of Brian), Akira Kurosawa's Dreams and Ran and The Seven Samurai, Godard's Breathless, Scorsese's "Life Lessons" segment from New York Stories, Ken Russell's Gothic and Altered States. Bogart and Bacall in Key Largo and To Have and Have Not are possibly the coolest human beings of all time! I love Pulp Fiction though I'm quite a bit less interested in Quentin Tarantino than I used to be. I'd say "I love everything Tim Burton has done," but then he went and did that Planet of the Apes movie, which messes that all up.
TelevisionI don't normally watch TV, but often enjoy some shows once they're stripped of commercials and released in a big, convenient season-set on DVD... stuff like Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Alias and Queer as Folk. Right now I'm watching Lost (first time in years I've watched a regular TV show as it's broadcast). Oh, and U of O football games!

BooksI was a lit major in school, so I have an endless affection for stories, books, and words, but these are my favorite things:
Ernest Hemingway "A Moveable Feast"
Ernest Hemingway "The Sun Also Rises"
William Faulkner "As I Lay Dying"
F. Scott Fitzgerald "Tender is the Night"
Raymond Carver "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love"
Jorge Luis Borges "Labyrinths"
J.G. Ballard "Crash"
Nick Bantock "Griffin and Sabine"
Russell Edson "The Tunnel: Selected Poems"
T.S. Eliot "The Waste Land, Prufrock and other Poems"
Anne Rice "The Witching Hour" and "Lasher" and "Taltos"
JRR Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings"
Colin Wilson "The Occult"
Michael Talbot "Mysticism and the New Physics"
Antoine de Saint-Exupery "Le Petit Prince"
I also love and respect everything written and drawn by Dr. Seuss.
HeroesDavid Bowie, Brian Eno, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Raymond Carver, Philip K. Dick, Bill Hicks, Andy Kaufman, Colin Wilson.

About me:
I like sounds, I like pictures, I like words, I like mystery, I like imagination, I like beauty, I like darkness, I like magic, I like dreams.

My life occupies both sides of the line between "fun, crazy and creative refuses-to-act-his-age guy," and "smart, practical and responsible grown-up with a nice house and a great job." Yay for me.

What else do you need to know about me? I used to have committed to memory all of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and I'd recite it at parties, and everyone would be super-impressed (or super-drunk and slightly impressed). Can't do all of it any longer, though... ahem... "Let us go then you and I, when the evening is spread out agains the sky like a patient etherised upon a table. Let us go through certain half-deserted streets, the muttering retreats of restless nights in one night cheap hotels and sawdust restaurants with oyster shells, streets that follow like a tedious argument of insidious intent to lead you to an overwhelming question. Oh do not ask what is it. Let us go and make our visit. In the room the women come and go, talking of Michelangelo..." Yeah, I need to work on the rest.

If you want to know about me, you should read my blog, where you will find out much more about me than you'll find on this profile.
Who I'd like to meet:
I already have many "real world" friends and enough to keep me pretty busy, but I believe you can never have too many cool and interesting people in your life. I'm interested in colorful and creative people, especially people who are "do-ers" and "thinkers" and "communicators" rather than sitting around on their ass in front of the TV.

I welcome people adding me as "friends" if we've met in person, or if we have some similar interests, or at least if we exchange a note or two first. Please don't send me an "add" request completely out of the blue, with no attempt to communicate first, or I will definitely ignore your request.

When I was 14, I went out with my father's best friend. It was embarrassing...my father having a 14-year-old best friend.

SHRINE's official website

The brandnew SHRINE's website is finally online. Completely designed by the artist, the page offers a great visual experience with its image/artwork galleries and of course a lot of information about SHRINE.
