“Listening to Scratch Tracks fans will be reminded of great bands of the 70’s including the Eagles. There’s definitely timelessness in the sound portrayed in each of the seven tracks, all written by S40 members.”

Stan Mofatt - Payne County Line
“These guys are master craftsmen! Such talented musicians, weaving us in and out of one mind picture to another.”

   About South40

Red Dirt Album of the Year - South 40 "HOME"
Harmonica Player of the Year - Lyle Deiter
Harmony Vocalist of the Year - Kelly Falkner

What: South 40 is a Country Rock/ Red Dirt band based in Southeastern, OK. South 40 was originally formed in 2002 and its current lineup has been together since the Summer of 2005. South 40 officially released its new cd, “Home” in January 2007 with a heavy push to small market country radio stations, Texas Country and Red Dirt Radio stations and Roots Rock/Americana Radio stations as well as Internet Radio.

Extras: ”Home” was recorded in Austin, TX at Cedar Creek Studios and Dirty Bird Studio in Norman, OK with Adam Odor producing.

*Guest appearances on “Home” include Roger Ray(steel guitar) and Noah Jeffries(fiddle) of Jason Boland and the Stragglers, John Michael Whitby(piano) of Asleep at the Wheel and George Strait’s Ace in the Hole band, Steve Littleton(Hammond B3) of Stoney Larue and Dustin Pittsley, and Red Dirt legend Randy Crouch(fiddle and vocals).

*Cedar Creek studios has seen virtually every major Texas artist as a client, including Stevie Ray Vaugn, Dixie Chicks, Shawn Colvin, Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, the Great Divide, Randy Rogers, Radney Foster, Bruce and Charlie Robison, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen, to name but a few.

*Dirty Bird Studios is owned by Mike McClure and Travis Linville and is a widely used studio in the Red Dirt/Texas Country music scene.

*The first single from “Home” is track 2, “If it’s all the same”.

*CD available on www.south40band.com or www.lonestarmusic.com or www.milesofmusic.com. "Home was in the top 10 selling cd's on MilesofMusic.com for January 2007. "Home" was in the top 10 selling cd's in Germany for March 2007.

*South 40 has surpassed the 13,000 friends mark on its Myspace.com website, which has translated into increased cd sales and increased attendance at concerts.

South40 and its members have shared the stage with artists such as:

  • Cross Canadian Ragweed
  • Jason Boland and the Stragglers
  • Randy Rogers Band
  • Robert Earl Keen
  • Wade Bowen
  • Stoney Larue
  • Leon Russell
  • Darryl Worley

  • Charlie Robison
  • Pat Green

*Miles of Music, January 2007 “Tulsa-based South 40's debut album Home catches its own reflection with a collection of songs that are both nostalgic and forward-looking. The album's title is taken from the metaphoric place we all come from. For South 40, that place varies from song to song, but ultimately brings the listener into the common experience. We all have stories and memories from our past, some we'd like to forget, some we relive over and over. Built on the foundation of Oklahoma country, this band proudly flies it influences by name-checking Waylon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Chris Ledoux in the album's closing track. The band has wisely stuck to a no-frills and honest brand of country letting the songs and the playing carry the load.”

*Matt Gleason, Tulsa World, October 2007 “…South 40 appears to have gotten its money’s worth, making an old country album sizzle with fiddle, 1950’s rock guitar and blues. Falkner’s lyrics pull heartstrings from across genres of music, while guest musician Roger Ray’s (Jason Boland and the Stragglers) steel guitar soars...”

*Gary Hizer, Urban Tulsa, October 2007 “…In all honesty, I haven't heard a local country record as solid as South 40's debut disc in a long time... …Sure, there's some rock and Southern rock influences there, but to my ears it's country more than anything else. In fact, South 40 may well be more country than many of the bands and CD's that are marketed in that genre anymore. …Disc opener "Goodbye" could fit in at country radio easily, sitting right next to Dierks Bentley and flaunting a guitar line worthy of Keith Urban comparisons (his playing, not his singing).A couple songs, like "If It's All the Same" and "Summer Wind" have a distinctly California-style country-rock flavor, due not only to the overall vibe, but also because the timber of Jay's voice can be very similar to that of Glenn Frey."I'm Not Over You" is another dead-on country single that Falkner might want to consider selling to Kenny Chesney at some point down the road and let the royalties pay for the next South 40 record…”

*Payne County Line, Stan Moffat, Stillwater, OK CD Reviews: rating: 5 / 5 “South 40 has a hit CD with "Home". From the first chord of 'Goodbye' to the last chord of 'On the Stage', Falkner and the band have put a lot of work and elbow grease into this CD and in the end it shines, as do their great live performances. If you like Oklahoma artists and music, this is a CD to add to your collection. The CD is solid in its production, engineering, and content. The vocals are on track and can take you on about any type of trip you'd like to take… from sad to glad to mad and beyond… The CD is in fact a trip back in time to a slower time when folks had time to care for each other, and to think things through. To often today, there is no time for such, and we get caught up in the rat race of trying to 'get' the brass ring… 'Still Searching' is just this… and up pops 'free' and we tend to celebrate new found freedom… something we can all identify with, the joy of a burden being lifted! "Don't worry friends,… Cause I have all the time I need". Headed 'Home', or the picture Jay paints of the 'Summer Wind' and the evening sunset, or … just in the nick of time… 'Got time to Party' rocks us to a new level… And then, the sobering effect of 'The Stage'. Jay picks us up and puts us on the stage with him through our mind's eye… standing there wondering what the greats of the past were doing now… or where they would be headed… What a superb finish to a very solid and classy CD. Now, I am a bit biased but I do love the harmony vocals by Kelly Falkner. I truly think she is one of Oklahoma's best kept secrets! She adds that touch of class and gold that every CD needs! 'Home' is going to become one of the best CD's of 2007, and that's just a plain fact. And how really great to finish off the year of 2006 and start off 2007 with such a solid CD! Jay, you and South 40 ROCK! Thanks for taking time to make this super set of tunes for us! This CD deserves a solid 5 out of 5 stars!“

Jay, I am glad to see your band doing so well. I remember when you were just starting out and you volunteered with my Special Olympic Softball team the "Wild Bunch" and your band played at our Christmas party. The Athletes still talk about you and your band and how great the music was.
