Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival
The Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival spotlights recent short films by filmmakers living and working in the Southeastern United States. Selected for their artistic merit by an esteemed panel of media arts professionals, these engaging short films will tour the South during the 2008-2009 season through two separate delivery methods:
The 2nd Annual Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival will tour throughout the region from September 2008 - May 2009 as a self-contained, 3 hour film festival that may be enjoyed in a single afternoon or evening.
Short Circuit has also been designed to serve as a complementary program to the Southern Circuit - Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Each of the twelve short films featured in the 2nd Annual Short Circuit Traveling Film Festival will be paired with one of the twelve filmmakers touring with Southern Circuit. The short films will serve as the opening acts for the touring filmmakers.

О себе:
Southern Circuit
Originated by South Carolina Arts Commission in 1975, Southern Circuit provides communities across the South with a tour of highly talented independent filmmakers. Initially launched in three South Carolina cities, the film tour has visited over 30 communities across the Southern United States. Since its inception, Southern Circuit audiences have seen over 200 films and have engaged filmmakers in post-screening discussions of the subjects and themes portrayed in their works.
Southern Circuit is the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. The tour takes the audience away from their televisions, DVD players, and computers to connect them with independent filmmakers and encourage them to talk with one another about the films and their meanings. Southern Circuit transforms watching independent films from a solitary experience into a communal one.
Credit Line: The Southern Arts Federation
The Southern Arts Federation (SAF) is a not-for-profit regional arts organization that has been making a positive difference in the arts throughout the South since 1975. SAF creates partnerships and collaborations; assists in the professional development of artists, arts organizations and arts professionals; presents, promotes and produces Southern arts and cultural programming; and advocates for the arts and arts education. The organization works in partnership with the nine state arts agencies of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. SAF is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), foundations, corporations, individuals and member states.

About The Film: 'Bama Girl
The Crimson Tide’s homecoming has a rich history, tied into centuries of privilege, old money and racial exclusivity. This powerful and enlightening documentary follows Jessica Thomas’s quest to become Homecoming Queen at the University of Alabama. “’Bama Girl” is the story of one black woman running against not only 15 other co-eds, but also a strictly segregated Greek system, internal black politics and, most ominously, a secret all-white association called “The Machine” that has been controlling politics at the University for most of the past century, including the Student Government and Homecoming Queen elections. Along the way the film divulges some surprising realizations about black vs. white, about Old South vs. New South, and about a surprising microcosm of electoral politics that mirrors much of what is happening across our country today. “’Bama Girl” has screened at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and at the Atlanta Film Festival.

He recently directed and produced a second feature-length documentary, “Children of All Ages.” Galloway is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and lives with his wife and three children in Davidson, North Carolina.
About The Film: A Man Named Pearl
“A Man Named Pearl” tells the inspiring story of self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar, whose unlikely journey to national prominence began with a bigoted remark. In 1976, Pearl took a job in a canning factory in Bishopville, South Carolina. He and his family looked at a home in an all-white neighborhood. The Fryar’s were notified that they were not welcome. One homeowner voiced the collective concern: “Blacks can’t keep up their yards."
Pearl was stung by the racial stereotype, but rather than become embittered, he was motivated. He bought a home in a “black” neighborhood and began fashioning a garden with the modest goal of becoming the first African-American to win Bishopville’s “Yard of the Month” Award. Pearl rescued throw-away plants from the local nursery, restored them to health and began cutting unusual and abstract shapes into the plants. Thirty years later he has created a magical three-acre wonderland that annually draws thousands of visitors from around the world.
Now 67, Pearl’s topiary garden generates much-needed tourism for Lee County, the poorest county in the state of South Carolina. But the impact that Pearl and his garden have on his community transcends economics. As Pearl’s minister says of the garden, “It’s the one place in South Carolina that people can go, both black and white, and feel love.”
Told in a candid and often humorous way, the film opens both hearts and minds offering an important message that speaks to respect for both self and others. It shows what one person can achieve when he allows himself to share the full expression of his humanity. “A Man Named Pearl” won the Crystal Heart and Audience Choice awards at the Heartland Film Festival, was a Critics Choice at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and an Audience Choice award winner at the Salem Film Festival.
