We are SouthWind, a country/gospel/bluegrass group with experience at variety shows and exhibitions throughout Nova Scotia. We provide fast paced, up beat, up-tempo shows, which our audiences enjoy. Our music appeals especially to the over 50 set, although younger people enjoy the close harmonies and enthusiastic presentations of our performances. We are well known for our gospel music and often perform in churches.
Our group consists of Dianne Tipert from Oak Hill in the Bridgewater area, (autoharp, lead vocals and harmony), Florence Morton from Liverpool (rhythm guitar, lead vocals and harmony), Reg Coolen from Mersy Point in the Liverpool area (fiddle, mandolin, and harmony)and Al Butler from Lower Sackville (vocals, harmony, standup bass and dobro). Individually, these musicians have been performing on stage for many years.
Our diverse backgrounds and various experiences with other music groups have produced a unique sound that adapts itself to almost any venue. All audiences appreciate our close harmony gospel music.
Our instrumentation is acoustic except for the autoharp, which needs a slight boost to bring its sound level to where it blends properly with the rest of the instruments. We have three lead singers and as well Florence and Dianne are songwriters. This gives us the opportunity to tailor our music to produce that sound which is uniquely SouthWind. We produce our music by gathering around a condenser microphone, and so can duplicate the sound from our cds on stage.
Although we are a four-member band, we actually have six instruments. Reg switches from fiddle to mandolin as the music requires and Al switches between Bass and Dobro
We released three CDs in 2006 (If Only, That Beautiful Shore and Reg's Christmas), and were nominated for two 2006 Nova Scotia Music Week Awards (Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year, and Inspirational Recording of the Year), Both of these nominations were for our gospel CD, That Beautiful Shore.
For the second year in a row 2007 SouthWind has been nominated by Music Nova Scotia for an award in the inspirational Artist/ Recording of the year catagory for their new CD Last Chance.
