We are SouthWind, two old ladies with a deaf fiddle player and a baldheaded guy on dog house bass.
Our specialty is gospel music but we perform classic country/bluegrass music as well.
We roll into events in our converted 1979 ambulance. The old ambulance holds seven people complete with gear and, if necessary, a sound system, our musicians and usually three spouses.
After all, we need roadies help to carry the gear. If we don’t travel by ambulance we often use two motor homes and a travel trailer so either way we usually stir up some excitement when we arrive.
Our group consists of Dianne Tipert from Oak Hill (autoharp, bass, lead vocals and harmony), Florence Morton from Liverpool (rhythm guitar, lead vocals and harmony), Reg Coolen from Mersy Point (fiddle, mandolin, and harmony) and Al Butler from Lower Sackville (bass, dobro, vocals and harmony).
Instrumentation is acoustic except for the autoharp, which needs a slight boost. Three lead singers give us the opportunity to tailor our music to produce a unique sound. Our original material is penned by Florence and Dianne and Dianne’s husband Brian.
We were awarded ‘Best Dressed Group’ Sunday Gospel, by the Hank Snow Society at the 2006 and 2007 Hank Snow Tributes.
We were nominated for two Music Nova Scotia awards for 2006, for Bluegrass/
Country Recording of the Year and Inspirational Recording of the Year, both nominations for our gospel CD ‘That Beautiful Shore’. In 2007 we were nominated again in the inspirational category for our CD " Last Chance."
Our busy 2008 summer season includes Privateers Days in Liverpool NS, July 6th; Founders Days in Shelburne NS, July 25; and the South Shore Exhibition on July 28th.
Previous CD’s for us are “If Only” which leans to the country side of our music, “That Beautiful Shore” Music Nova Scotia nominated for Country Recording of the Year and Inspirational Recording of the Year, “Reg’s Christmas” and “Last Chance”, Music Nova Scotia nominated Inspirational Recording of the Year.
June 29th of 2008 we released our 5th CD, “The Sun Always Rises”. This CD contains a selection of 16 of our favorite gospel tunes highlighting our expanding musical horizons and featuring an original gospel song from which our CD takes its title.
For the third year in a row SouthWind has been nominated by Music Nova Scotia for awards in two categories: Country / Bluegrass Artist / Group Recording and Inspirational Artist / Group Recording for their newest CD entitled “The Sun Always Rises”

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him:lo,I have told you."
